Rotring 600 - finishes, old vs. new, etc.

I've been pondering picking up a Rotring 600 and I've noticed a big spread in prices on these - for example, I can get a copper Newton (newer style) for about $50, whereas the lava finish is more like $120.

What are the major differences between these? I assume it's an old vs. new style, materials-used thing that accounts for the difference.

Or I guess I could just look at dogpoet's 600 vs. Newton review: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...showtopic=78205

The Newton (not "Newton 600") is quite different and not nearly as popular as the 600 model. Finishes are silver, black, and lava. You can pick up a Lava version for about $90 shipped on average, if you are patient enough. They keep coming up on FleaBay, so don't feel like the one you see right now is the "last one". I waited and got mine for $84 shipped. It's a great pen--I really like the matte finish texture. I'd pick it over any of the other Rotring 600's.

One thing about the lavas though is that the texture holds ink. So if you dip the section while filling, remember to wipe it down with a wet paper towel (MUST be wet- dry towels won't do anything) or risk very, very inky fingers.

Thanks for the clarification - Rotring really didn't make it easy with their nomenclature, did they?

Or just fill straight from the converter, I think Rotring designed all their pens with that in mind, even the ink bottle they used to sell was designed to fill up a converter without having to dip it in the bottle.

So does that mean each time you want to fill up ink, you would remove the converter from the nib section and dip the converter into the inkwell? Otherwise, I don't see how this is done.

I paid only 35 euros for my lava 600. I know prices are going up as these are no longer in production. But American eBay sellers have outrageous prices on Rotrings. Better buy at the German eBay.de
