Nice little review. Thanks for posting it

By the way, platinum nibs are not the only ones with the heart shaped breathing holes

This is a very creative and good review. Thank you.

I agree the 3776 is a small pen - at least for me. But Platinum pens write very well and I find the Koi material to be lovely. I do not have a Koi yet. The size does cause me to put other pens ahead of it in priority, but I think the time for one is coming.

The Koi is such a cool pen. i just inked mine up last night. Fun to right with and catches everyone's eye.

By the way, I have seen vintage Waterman pens with heart shaped breather holes.

Thank you for yor review.

Is the Platinum Koi the same fp as the Nakaya Celluloid Goldfish (or are there major differences)?

Nakaya, a Japanese fountain pen company, was set up in 2001 by Toshiya Nakata (grandson of the founder of Platinum pen company). Nakaya sets itself apart by specializing in customised fountain pens that are handmade by experienced former craftsmen from the Platinum Pen company. Also, if you have a nakaya, a platinum converter works fine in it.

I adore the Platinum Koi! It was the first truly nice pen I purchased & it was the beginning of my pen addiction. I still think it's one of my most beautiful pens! Platinum nibs are fantastic -- enjoy your pen!

Nice review, FP Writing. I've heard many great compliments of the Platinum 3776 Koi, so I'm not surprised that you're enjoying it so much. Platinum nibs are very understated. Many of them are quite plain looking, but write extremely well.

Do you have any other Platinum pens? What pen would you compare the Koi to? It strikes me as a little similar to the Pilot 74.

I have the 'Calico'. (Or is it 'Stone'? I can't remember.) Anyway, with the 'music' nib, it has had some use as a working pen, marking students' assignments and so on. Results? (The pen's, not the students'.)

Nib? Absolutely excellent. Effectively, a wide stub. With good flow and colour saturation, without being too wet.

Celluloid? Excellent. However, it is neither wrapped nor drilled, but fused along a straight line, which is obvious for all to see. Not good.

Trim? Rubbish. Mine has started to tarnish and rust(!) already. (Why do manufacturers neglect trim?)

Converter? OK.

Balance when posted? Excellent.

Would you buy another? No. I'll have the trim on mine replated, but I will keep the pen.

Yes the Platinum celluloid is fused, so the line is visible at the thread section.

The overall is a well made pen.

The size is closed to a pilot 74.

But the pilot 74 is thinner at the grip section.

As for nibs, i personally prefer the pilot and sailor nibs.

But the celuloid is beautiful, if that is, you like celluloid

regards

Is that staining on the section of your pen?

I bought a celluloid tortoise and adore it-in my opinion, the big 18 k nibs on these pens are even better than sailors-and the celluloids are so much prettier than most sailor pens, which to my eye seem "cookie cutter." Love the weight, size, design and performance of these pens, which deserve more attention.

The black colouring of the feed comes through the celluloid section. That's why it looks like a stain. It looks the same when inked. To me it looks just like a goldfish, (Carp/Koi) and the black coming through the celluloid just looks like the inside of the fish. It's one of my favourites. Enjoy your Koi and I like the packaging too.

You have to be careful when choosng your nibs from Nakaya because they run very fine. (as do other Japanese nibs.)

Thanks.

This is a beautiful pen and your handwritten review was a lovely compliment! I've had an eye on this pen but just could never pull the trigger because of the size and the trim. Do you find that the trim looks a little less...'nice' than other Japanese pens? Something always struck me as maybe even a little cheap in regards to the trim on the Koi. But I've never seen one in person.

I had the Nakaya goldfish & jade pens for a time. It was a very difficult decision to sell them as they were beautiful - truly works of art. However, the 3776 (which these pens are in terms of function) is a fairly slim pen and I found that I was using the pens only rarely. More often I'd pick up a Pelikan M800 or M1000 or other larger pen. As many of us must do from time to time, I reduced my investment in pens by giving these up.

I also like Platinum's #3776 Celluloid models. I use a Blue and a Green as my daily writers. I can use them unposted comfortably as the pen is very light. Despite this light weight, the pen writes almost with its own weight, which mean is the nib and feed are finely tuned.

yes, i think the section is tainted

with ink..... <img src="https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crybaby.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":crybaby:" border="0" alt="crybaby.gif" /> although i still like the overall celluloid color.

So many celluloid pens have plastic grip section or silver

Is it possible to stain a celluloid section? My Blue and Green are not tainted to date.
