Miquelrius Notebooks

I've got a large sprial notebook with a plastic cover that bleeds fairly badly with fountain pens, and a matching phone book that does the same. I've also got a small 4x6 one with a heavy cardboard cover that I don't think I've tried yet. It was on sale for $5 so I bought it. But basically I haven't had much luck with Miquelrius for fountain pens so I usually just avoid them.

As BiffyBeans often says, YMMV. Quite true, I suppose. With Noodler's X-Feather in a fine nib, you can probably journal successfully on a paper towel.

What are the notebook options for Miquelrius' bound notebooks? Do they just make one pocket size? I am having an odd amount of trouble finding anything on their website.

Just as an FYI - Miquelrius makes books with count em' "FIVE" different grades of paper. There is one that's 70G 100% recycled, then the regular books go in weights of: 70g, 80g,90g & 100g. The ones I used each had 70g paper in them. I'm betting that people that said that theirs didn't bleed, were using ones with heavier paper.

Check this list:

Thanks for this; it explains a lot. I wish I would have noticed this before ordering 70g leather-look! I still like writing in it, but I will not be getting another.

Nope, the spiral bound notebook I used was the Polyproylene Notebook 1 – 70 gr/m2 to take extensive lecture notes, and it had absolutely no bleed through or feathering with all the inks I mentioned in my previous post (minus the PR Naples Blue), as well as Diamine Woodland Green, and Diamine Golden Brown. I think the paper between this notebook and the flexible grid one I mentioned previously are different papers altogether.

We use a wide range of Miquel Ríus Notebooks at home. The paper, not being as luscious as Clairefontaine/Rhodia ones, is simply the best ink taking paper around and is recommended go get some now if your haven't tried them yet. The paper takes ink like no other. And stays on it -200 year warranty at least for any European made ink-.

Is true that shows some hints of the other side of the paper and that with some inks a hint of bleed through occurs.

This one is an Clairefontaine caiher. Also shows a bit.

Nothing intrusive at all on any of them. All my inks are European brands but for the black and brown shown here, Noodler's black and Standart Brown respectively. Waterman's blue and the usual house mix of burple are the other two. Noodler's seems to show more and have a hint of bleed through, specially the brown. It does not interfere with what you write on the other side of the page at all in most cases.

This is a high quality paper and the range of products is very good. On the other hand, and really liking other papers, the only Apica I've used -sent for a traveling journal-, bled through badly. Roger can have a saying on this.

Go get a Miquel Ríus.. like for yesterday!

Anyone ever tried Rhodia? Its cheaper, has 80gramme High Grade Vellum paper.

I'm betting that people that said that theirs didn't bleed, were using ones with heavier paper.

Too bad you've no luck with Miquelrius notebooks. I have to say they've become my favorite. I use the leather-look 70g weight ones and only have bleed through if I use a medium or broad nib. I use the notebook for my daily journal and planner; I tend to write with EF nib though so that may account for the lack of bleed through. I do write on both sides.

I've used Moleskines, Exacompta, Rhodia, Clairefontaine, Levenger paper, and BnR among others but kept coming back to Miquelrius for its paper but also the light grid color. It does not lie flat but does lie opened on its own and writing on the left (back) side is not bad after the first 5 pages or so. Just smooth it down. I finally got Renaissance-Art customized cover for the 4x6 notebook and the 6x8 notebook --- heavenly :) Maybe it's the covers but I've had no problem with the binding falling apart.

If you use EF nib and like grid paper, I'd recommend trying Miquelrius (I'm not a spiral notebook fan so have not tried any of the other Miquelrius though). Try the 100 or 200 pages first; some report problems with the binding on the 300 pg (though I have not had problem with my 300 pg). FWIW, I don't like the "new" flexible ones with the elastic closure. Those have large 5 mm grid instead of the smaller 4 mm grid -- just not the same

  • 5 years later...

I bought this journal some time ago with soft blue cover that seems to have like... 500 pages. Really thick. I had it for several months and yesterday tried with a new B6 nib. I did not know the brand.

Now, after these tests since I am new to FPs This is going to be my journal for many things since it works perfectly for all my needs. Thick B6, fine nib sketches, dark blacks and blues, etc.

No problems with this journal. With so many pages, I don't mind that it is slightly three through (even with the B6 nib it shows only slightly).

I just did a test with watercolor pencils (shown below) and holds water + ink very well also.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
