Waterman Serenite

I bought from a friend a black Waterman Serenite.

I bought it because I love its design.Just like I love the Edson I love the Serenite too.

Waterman is the only pen maker out of the big three that still makes pens that are impressive.

True Parkers Duofold is also a wonderful pen but its jusr a copy to what used to be an amazing pen back in the days.

The Edson and Serenite are 2 pens with a brave design and even if they are not mass produced they are still a proof Waterman is alive and kicking.

I am not a Waterman fan or collector but I know how to respect a company that is making impressive pens.

Anyways do you own a Serenite ?

Do you find its unique curvy shape comfortable to use ?

Dod you use your Serenite everyday ?

Does Waterman still producess the Serenite ?

Respect to all

I have three Serenites -- black, cocobolo wood, and the blue one. They are very comfortable for me to use, and like you, I love the design. I don't use mine everyday because I don't want to lose it at work, but I do use them frequently at home.

There is a grey one currently available, I believe, and several very expensive makie-e versions floating around out there (more than I can ever spend).

I would so love to have these pens...but it's never gonna happen unless some unknown person leaves me a large bequest! ;)

They are truly gorgeous, IMHO.

Congrats on the new arrival and good to see a devoted MontBlanc man start to see the light !!!!

Seriously though.... I have always admired the Serenite but never taken the plunge (yet!). Got three Edsons now and managed to buy a few spare nibs as well so dont know if the Serenite has anything to offer above & beyond the Edson. Do like the titianium model and dare say one day I will 'aquire' one.

Just emptied my collection on the table with a view to thinning out the flock........as usual all are now back in cabinet with the shortlist of pens for sales consisting of................NONE! Ah well at least the wife was happy for just over an hour while she planned a shopping spree on the forth coming funds

I also have the Serenite Blue. It was/is my only fountain pen (I have a Harmonie on the way) and found an Exception Slim / black on sliver fine nib brand new for $257.. Which im dieing to grab!!!

But I have to be honest, as luck would have it I became the owner of one Blue Serenite hot off the assembly line for no more then the price of a few cocktails at happy hour!!!! Curious? ....lol, well even if your not interested in hearing my Serenite story im gonna tell you all anyway!

So, about 8 months ago I was at work sitting in fount of my computer after coming from a very intense, and extremely intimidating "power" meeting. I was mentally drained and for a lack of a better word, feeling simply inferior to the company who were present at the meeting. As i sat and pondered the meeting, trying (for my own growth) to pin point what made these men so intimidating in both appearance and stature, my fathers words from childhood came crashing into my conciseness like a bolt of lightning! He would say to me "Son, every man, when amongst like men needs to have three things by which to set them selves apart from sheep (in terms of appearance, not intellect); A good watch, an exquisite pen, and fine belt". What struck me was that fact that indeed every man (and woman) presnt at that meeting had a stunning watch (an older gentleman actually had an old clip and chain pocket watch) and a very beautiful pen!

So with that I set off to find the pen to serve as my sword against corporate anonymity. All i knew for sure was that I wanted my pen to be a Fountain pen, and i wanted it to be a Waterman as that was what my father would always use when i was growing up. After a scouring the web during my lunch hour with the conviction that could best be described as that of a 16 year old's search for the perfect first car, I stumbled across the Serenite... WOW... It was love at 1st sight! Of course there was no price listed on Waterman's website, and in my naivete thought the pen couldn't possibility be more then 2 or 3 hundred dollars (i mean what pen in the world could cost more then that?? lol). As i sat starstruck and drooling, my boss walked up behind me and asked, " are you thinking about getting a Waterman?" "As it turns out" he continued, "the man we just hired to be our new CFO is an executive at Rubbermaid in Paris (apparently they own Waterman) and could probably get that pen for a discount before he leaves to come work for us." So i said thank you so much and printed out the page and gave it to my boss, and when back to my daily tasks.

It wasnt more then 7 weeks later, and my pen dreaming all but forgotten, that our new CEO had his 1st day in the office. After the standard introductions, i returned to my desk with my head deep in spreadsheets, when our new CEO came to pay me an unexpected visit. when I looked up he placed an elegant blue box clad with a small gold seal at its middle with the famous W impressed upon it. He looked at me and said "well, heres your pen!" I couldn't believe it! I had all but forgotten about the conversation i had with my boss weeks prior and sat there studdering thank yous the best i could manage as my head filled with backlogged memories of that day. He chuckled and said " I couldnt believe that out of all our pens i would get a request for a Serenite, you do realize that this is the most expensive pen Waterman makes?" Still not knowing the price I asked him how much the pen retails for. When he told me, my shock turned to a sharp and very sudden sensation of guilt. I pushed the pen back and begged for him to please keep it and explain that i had only been looking when my boss had walked up and made the proposal!

Anyway to bring this long story to a close, he allowed me to give him no more then the cost of a few drinks and some friendly introductions to the local "wild life" after work as payment for the pen and insisted that to not except the gift would be an insult to him.. So, 8 months or so later I am still the proud owner of one beautiful Waterman Sertenite Blue, and although i no longer work for the same firm, we (the CFO and I) still keep in touch regularly and chat about pens!

Well, thats the story of how i obtained my first fountain pen, and the subsequent love affair that followed in its wake!

Cheers,

Dorji

Nice story, Dorji!

The Serenites are beautiful pens and I have coveted one for a long time, however, they are unfortunatley a bit out of my price range!

Can anyone tell me what the section is made out of and whether it's comfortable? From photos I have seen, the section looks to be made from coiled metal. Is this right?

Dear Leonie

When I will get the pen I will take pictures and write a full review of it (as I always do) so I hope this will answer all your questions.

Congrats on the new arrival and good to see a devoted MontBlanc man start to see the light !!!!

This is funny but even though MB is my favorite pen maker and I buy its pens with great joy then in no way do I limit myself only to MB pens.

I am also the proud and very happy owner of the Edson. And dont forget that first and formost my biggest and main collection is sheaffer Snorkel.

Leonie, the section/band is sterling silver and is meant to represent the element which the pen is designed after, in my case with the serenite blue the band is designed to look like ice/glacier. I find that the band is actually very comfortable and allows for a firm grip even with sweaty fingers :-)

Waterman can say what ever they want but to me the pen looks like a Katana Japanese sword (well a little one).

No one answered my last question is the Serenite still produced ?

They will perhaps stop it next year, J.M.L.

Oh that will be a shame, this is one of the most unique non LE pens in production today.

I think that of all the major pen manufacturers still in existence, Waterman is the most serious about designing pens that are different.

I don't mean different like some of the Italians, where they look like they are dipped in rococo chintz, or makers like Conway Stewart who just keep on stamping out yet another glittzy pen to attract the magpie collectors, but a maker that really puts some effort into creating something interesting.

Yes, the Serenite is a good example, but other models like the Edson, Exception, and Etalon stand up well, and I am a big fan of even the more conventional Man 100, Gentleman, the stylish CF and a number of others.
