Don't forget the 888 Edition of the Montblanc Francois I - the entire barrel and cap are Mother of Pearl.

Montblanc usually reserves Mother of Pearl for the 888 Editions of the Patron of the Arts Series, and for the even more rarified Artisan Edition pens.

It's a pity, because the small addition of the Mother of Pearl MB Star just transforms the look of the pen.

I tried a few weeks ago to entice a pen maker with a 3-D scanner and a computer controlled 3-D lathing machine to craft a Mother of Pearl replacement for the MB Star on my 149 - but he never got back to me.

+1 for the 888 Ed. Since you like MB pens already, this one is the reach for pen! Before this came out, I never knew so much MOP could look so good! It looked amazing at the boutique... :cloud9:

The question remains only partially answered.

There are evidently a few manufacturers who produce pens with Mother of Pearl but apparently not many. Is this because of the curvature of the pens? I confess to knowing very little about MoP other than having an appreciation of its beauty.

As I found out buying vintage buttons, good mother of pearl is becoming more scarce (overfishing, pollution, etc. etc.), which is going to make the prices go up. It's also much more labour-intensive to make things out of mother of pearl. You can't just mould it or turn it on a lathe.

Hmm, how much is that one?

$3450!!!!!

Honestly, if I had that kind of money and needed another pen, I'd probably get it, though with Kikyo urushi instead of black.

I'd get it after the Jules, though.

Strictly speaking, mother of pearl is the inside of the mollusk shell that is laid down on a grain of sand or the like to make a pearl. The resulting pearl may be white, black, blue, orange or any variety of colours depending on the colour of the mother.

I guess the OP was talking about white mother of pearl though...

Oooh. Orange mother of pearl. :puddle:

I'm not even fond of orange really, but that sounds awesome. Thanks for clarifying. I knew MoP was the shell, but I was confused about what abalone is. Abalone is the name of the mollusk itself then, and mother of pearl is the shiny part of the shell? I assume you can get mother of pearl from various species.

From what I have read, MOP isn't used much as it is considerably more difficult to work with than today's materials. I personally love MOP when it is mated with complimenting materials and colors. I would love to see more pens made from it, though I'm sure I could afford them!

I have spoken to the fine folks at Taccia pens about their Mother of Pearl and why it is notoriously scarce. I have been told that it is a very hard material to work with and usually has a high defect rate when manufacturing the pens.

I absolutely love mother of pearl, and have been wondering why this material is not used by pen makers more often...

I don't know if other pen-related mother of pearl items are of interest to you but this one looks yummy to me and I thought you might enjoy it. All the usual disclaimers apply.

For me the holy grail of MoP pens has always been the Aurora 85th anniversary. Alas, at USD15,000, it shall remain one that's forever out of reach!
