Pilot 78G Cartridge?

The pen usually comes with a CON-20 squeeze converter installed. You can replace it with a CON-50 if you prefer piston converters, but the CON-20 holds a bit more ink. It will also accept Pilot/Namiki cartridges, which hold more ink than either converter, and with a bit of silicone grease to seal the threads you can use it as an eyedropper pen for maximum ink capacity.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm new to FPs and am completely unsure as to... well, anything. I know the ad said one thing, but my experience with ebay hasn't always left me confident in the descriptions that the sellers use.

I'm very excited to start using these (and other) pens. And the ink. Can't forget the ink! I've already purchased a few samples from Pear Tree Pens, and want to make certain that I will have everything necessary so I can hit the ground running. :D

The squeeze converter that comes with the 78G isn't properly a CON-20, to my understanding; it just has a band over the rubber sac, whereas the CON-20 is a fully-metal-sheathed dealie.

EDIT: Oops, I see this is the thread where we already discussed that a year and a half back. :)

I stand corrected: "The 78G usually ships with an economy-model squeeze converter of about the size and capacity of a CON-20." :-)

Does anyone know how to remove the converter that comes installed in these? I'm not sure whether to pull it out, or if it twists out. Don't want to damage it. :)

Mine were just pushed onto the cartridge spike, like a cartridge. The fit is snug so a little twist will probably help ease it off.

FYI, mine came with the springy pinch-type converter. It can take the short cartridges made for the Petit, although I had to cut off two little tabs on the front end of the cartridge.

Quote from Altair reply no. 13 "So I ditched the converter-- the 78G is an absolutely wonderful eye dropper. Put a little plumber's wax on the section thread and it is completely ink tight, no O ring required. I've been using it this way for months. No leaks, no blurpage and it holds a ton of ink."

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The simple straight forward eye dropper design has held my intrest for some while now. I have looked into buying a Wality of that design but was put off by the limited nib selection. I've considered reaming a Shaeffer No-Nonsense barrel and glueing in an Estie section so that I'd have a changable nib eye dropper [i still may try that]. Your information about the conversion of your Pilot 78G is great news! My Double Broad 78G is an ink hog and with Pilots' cartridge selection so limited and their converter capacity so small I have not been able to fully enjoy this econo-writer. I'll convert my pen this afternoon. If my results match yours I'll buy two more -a Broad and a Medium of different colors- and sell my Esterbrooks.

Thanks again,

Doc Holt

I have purchased several 78Gs from pokydady - they all take Pilot cartridges.

Thank you for the info.

I order one anyway, those with standard cartridges seem difficult to find. It would have been nice to be able to use std cartridges to try out some new inks, but I'll have to get it in bottles then and use the converter ( .. or get an other pen :)

Guys,

I am from Bangalore India ...been collecting, writing and doing sketches using a variety of FPs. ( Parker/ Lamy / Pilot G78 / Pilot Vanishing Point / Sheaffer/ Cross / our own home grown Camlin. Also into collecting Pencil writing instruments.

I have a couple of G78 that I fill with Laurel Rose/ Emerald Green and Turquoise inks available here OTC.

Pilot sells Ink cartridges that are compatible to most of their pens. ( The tongue holder seems to have a proprietary design that takes

seems to take ONLY Pilot cartridges. I should get my set of cartridges from Pilot for the G 78 by this month end. I shall post my experience then.

Keep Writing.
