Field notes! Have you tried them?

Hello all,

I've been using the Cahiers for a small pocket journal for a few months now. I'm not very happy with the paper quiality and am thinking about testing out something new. I read a little about the Field note notebooks. Same size at the Moleskine Cahiers, only with a Rhodia 'type' paper. I'm just looking for a little feed back?

Thanks a bunch.

Absolutely wonderful! The paper is fantastic - not super-slick like Rhodia, but lovely to write on with zero feathering. Love mine! :)

I don't go anywhere without it. The size is perfect to slip into your pocket and the paper is great. I like the sepia toned grid lines, too - not as obtrusive as a brighter color. My biggest beef with the field notes is the cover. It's a paper-cover and is a bit on the flimsy side. My first book went into service in May, and the cover fell off the other day. But I was nearly done with it and need to start another anyway, so I guess it lasted long enough.

I don't leave home without it. No problems with durability to report, here. I kept one in my sweaty front pocket in hot hot hot Japan through late July and early August, and it looks not much worse for wear. Filled it in ~3 weeks, and notebook #2 is on about the same pace here in rainy-season Grenada with no structural wear.

I'm trying out using it as a handmade planner (see this photo from the Field Notes "Sheet Team") for a couple of weeks to see how it does. So far it looks like more inter-week blank pages might be in order.

I keep my L2K and P51 clipped to the current page (from the front or the back, as called-for). The P51's clip digs into the top of the pages more, and the bottom of the L2K's clip smooths out and weakens the paper a little where they come into contact, but nothing too serious.

One thing that's hard is putting a brand spanking new crisp Field Notes in your pocket. They're so nice when new, you really want to cherish it. After a day or so of use, that look and feel is gone and you're too busy using it all the time to miss it.

Very good notbooks but they do feather and bleed with some pen/ink combos. Not too badly but they can. Just buy one pack if you can and try them first with your preferred combo.

I really like them and my duofolds and Parker 75 with Parker or Waterman inks are fine with the paper.

I love the Field Notes, first bought some at the Pear Tree (thanks, James). I liked them so much when I placed an order with Binder, I got some more.

I sent a trio to my eco-biologist daughter who loves them and uses them in the field....:D

I started a series with mine for each of the article I write for a magazine, each one dedicated to a project with contact info, and short notes.

They don't scare folks that I interview as much as big fact pads. :meow:

Just a random question....what do you guys write in these small pocket notebooks?

Mostly quotidian, practical stuff.

I write:

Phone numbers,

email addresses,

to do lists,

to get lists,

notes from phone conversations with financial aid people, insurance people, school administrators of various stripes,

budget stuff,

snail mail addresses,

notes about classes (way too small to take actual class notes, but if there's something specific to do or get or print, reminders for that),

FP wishlists,

notes on the pencil I'm using that week for the pencil reviews I post each (+/-) weekend,

stuff that I want to look up on the Internet when I get back to a computer,

what weights I should be going for on various exercises in the gym,

schedules,

recipes,

directions for how to get from A to B

I could go on...

As a school teacher, I keep mine in my back pocket, always available when I need to jot a note or two. I love them.

Yep, I use 'em and love 'em. Wonderful paper, very sturdy and perfect for jotting down all the little things I need to remember from time to time. Also, not to be too chauvinistic about it, but it's nice to use a paper product made entirely in the U. S. A. for a change.

Since I was handed my first sample pack, I've never gone without a Field Notes in my pocket. We don't sell a huge selection of accessories, but we picked up Field Notes immediately -- I think they are simply superb. The people who buy them from us echo this sentiment.

The Field Notes book has, printed inside its back cover, a list of practical applications, which list I reproduce here verbatim:

Lengthy "to do" lists

Grocery lists

Inspired Ramblings

Letters Back Home

Shoddy Sketches

Half-Ass Calculations

Crop Predictions

Small Schematics

Colleague Addresses

Hymns/Prayers

Big Ideas/Insights

Small Ideas/Notions

Family Tree Lineage

Poignant Quotes

Hate Mail

Financial "Planning"

Escape Routes

Daily Journal Entries

Crafted Lyrics

Illegible Autographs

Road Trip Mileage

Shady Transactions

Phone Numbers

Treasure Maps

Gambling Debts

Topographic Studies

Loose Promises

Scrapbook Fodder

Tall Orders

Last Will/Testament

Hey, I frequently write within at least 17 of those genres! And in addition, I often write, ahem, field notes. I need to get me a bunch of those.

I've only just started to 'journal' my life. So these serve as a quick easy and portable way to document my day.
