Nice chinese pens

Hi all, a friend of mine left for China yesterday and will stay tere for more than a month.

I'd like to ask him to bring me a nice (more than one :P) chinese fountain pen, paying for it the small price it should have in China.

What should i ask for?

The price cap would be about 50$, but more than one, inexpensive pens, would be nice to!

Is there any site i can see picture of chinese pens?

Thanks!

Will your friend be in Shanghai? If so, send me a pm. I'll tell you a few places to check out.

I was just in Shanghai for a few weeks and spent time on Nanjing road and Book road. Got a few pens and Penman ink there as well as an ink stone. I am probably going back- can you list some suggestions.

After owning many of the $7 (U.S. price) Chinese pens with problems--I'd stick to the above $16-in-U.S. pens. Like Duke at www.goldquills.com. You can't beat the smooth (but not too smooth) German nibs.

Or the more expensive Jinhao...

A really cheap pen which is very scratchy, writes too dry, or leaks--is no bargain at any price. Stick to $16 and above (U.S. price) Chinese pens.

That's my H.O.,

Hi There can I give some advice about chinese pens. I in the last 3 months have bought about 15 Chinese pens, most of them from gotoschool888 on ebay, I have at least ten Jinhao, some Baoer. and a pen which I think every collector should have it is called a Leonardo which only costs about $5. or so. I find that all of these pens are just the smoothest to write with and are very well constructed. Please contact me for more info if needed, for your $50, you should get at least 3 pens if not more. regrds oneill;

Depending on your taste in pens --

Top of the line pens --

1) Fine nib - Hero 100 or Hero 329 (old style, rounded cap, symbol on hood above nib). Very light pens.

2) Medium fine nib - Haolilai 611 or 801. Medium light pens.

3) Medium nib - Jinhao Dragons Descendent (Offspring) range. Some come in checked silver or gold, some have a pewter or copper etched barrel. Quite heavy.

Inexpensive pens (good to have to experiment with inks)

1) Medium fine nib - Jinhao X-450, Huashilai 3000. Medium heavy.

I think pretty well all of these pens have been reviewed on the FPN, so you should be able to find pictures. You will need pictures, as the model numbers seem to vary a lot with different vendors.

There are many other brands, such as Kaigelu, Guanleming, Wing Sung, Crocodile, etc. Nothing wrong with them, I have a Guanleming and a Crocodile myself, but the ones mentioned above consistently rise to the top in these sorts of discussions.

From my limited experience, I agree with the choice of Hualilai and Jinhoa Dragon's Descent. I am sure I have read on these pages the view that pens like the Jinhao in wooden gift boxes, with papers, may well become collectible in the future as the Chinese people get more disposable income. Pens Commemorating historical or cultural events in presentation boxes would probably be desk divas, but might well enable your descendants to get back what you spent on the pens.

  • 1 month later...

Don't forget "Lanbitou".

I ordered a few from Ebay (search "fountain pen lanbitou" and check "search title and description")and am really surprised with

the feel and stroke. (Goldquills Pen Store)

One of them (the 986) even has a somewhat flexible nib, however I'm not sure that all 986's do.

It's a light/medium weight pen, medium nib, blue crosshatched pattern, and has a nifty clip that opens a bit when you press near the top

for thicker pocket material on your shirts.
