Lamy Vista eyedropper conversion

Recommended Posts

Sorry to revive this dormant thread but I just performed the Vista ED conversion and feel pretty good about it.

The RB barrel I got, did not have any breather holes in it so there was no issue there.

The black metal ring (that looks like a rubber o-ring on images of the vista) does have a function: it holds the cap closed. Therefore, you cannot replace it.

I used a 7mm inner diameter o-ring and some silicone lube as sealant. The 7mm o is rather tight, but the rubber has to have a smaller diameter than the black metal ring or else the cap won't click anymore. If you do not apply the clear lube moderately, there simply is no mess to worry about. One should have the discipline, however, only to open the barrel when refilling.

I used a 2ml hospital syringe to fill the barrel and I needed 1,5 squirts: I guess the barrel easily holds 3ml of ink, which will last quite some time in my F nib.

I have had no leaks or blobs so far, but have been using only for half a day. I did put it in my shirt pocket for over an hour and no leaks found.

Respectfully disagreeing since 1978.

Good going, Siv! What a neat solution too. Yeah, an eye dropper is certainly not as convenient as a converter, but with a capacity like that it'll dramatically reduce the number of times to refill. I wonder if it has any effect on the ink flow through the feed (more, less, or no change). Also, it'll be interesting to see if the barrel can be completely cleaned of ink residue (maybe there are crevaces that might be hard to reach). Definitely find the Lamy Vista review and add a link to this write-up as an addendum. <img src="https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

I also just realized... if the rollerball body works on the fountain pen section, why did they bother to make an "ink window" version? The whole thing is clear, so it's really unnecessary. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hmm1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm1:" border="0" alt="hmm1.gif" />

As a side note, I noticed the Vista rollerball body parts are all $10, while the fountain pen body parts are $15. I wonder if the cap is the same design for both. If so, it's not quite fair for Lamy to charge $10 for one and $15 for the other. Does anyone have both types in either a Vista or Safari to check?

there is an ink window because it uses the same injection mold for the solid colored ones that need an ink window.

Thanks,

David

Why not push in a o-ring of smaller diameter into the circular groove?

That should do it.

I know I'm 4 years late here, but hey, the important thing is that I'm here :)

Do you know if there are any videos or pics around, that show step by step how to seal the barrel?

I've read this beautiful post, I've seen a video about that, but there is not enough visual aid on how to do that.

Thank you for the post

First post after stalking for some time.

Shame on me. Years after the original post and I I only read the first few posts here and immediately ordered a Vista rb. Lamy no longer sells parts so I searched for a reasonable price on one. Weeks later it arrived here in Colorado from ENGLAND. Oy… I swapped barrels and squirted ink into my new RB barrel… it was then I discovered the tiny holes at the end of the barrel. Bummer. Now that I have returned to this forum and discovered several more pages of posts that detail the problem and potential solutions to those dang holes. Do we have any more idea why they are there?

Any way, the aquarium sealant seams the best bet so far. Is it available at the pet store? Anybody want the rest after I use that tiny bit to seal my pen barrel?

I'm grateful for all these updates. Thanks to all you intrepid ED pioneers.

Sourcing the Lamy RB barrel without buying the whole pen has held me up. I am in the ConUSA. Can anyone share a link for sourcing just the barrel?

Thank you.

I'm a little more late to the party, but I saw a photo of an ED Lamy on Pinterest and i couldn't resist. All that pretty ink swirling around :D

Do you think that a load of clear polish will fix the holes in the RB body? If I pour it in a few drops at a time from the inside, it should work to form a seal. It dries completely in 24 hours and I don't think it'll react with ink but... I'm not 100% sure. Any ideas? Just curious as I already have clear polish and don't have clear epoxy...

If you want a faster and better alternative, go buy a Kaweco Sport Classic Clear pen, use some silicon grease, or teflon tape and pour some ink into the barrel. No need to find an RB barrel or to cover-up any holes.

That is a very fair idea... And much more pratical than hunting down a RB barrel.
