Cleaning Moldy Bottles

Huy

Recommended Posts

I bought a used bottle of Montblanc ink recently only to find that it has mold. It was cheap and I would like to keep the bottle for other inks. How do I clean the bottle properly so that the new ink does not get contaminated? Thanks for the help.

I think a good flush with hot water and soap will do the trick. Otherwise, you can use bleach : bye bye molds :D

Yes, really hot water will do and bleach is even better. Put the bottle in the dish washer. Just make sure to also clean the cap well (that will not stand very high temps - just use bleach there)

Clean out what you can with water, then wash well with hot, soapy water. I'd suggest sanitizing once you get all the visible stuff out with soapy water. You could use a mild bleach solution, one of the oxygen-based sanitizers used in wine or beer making or put a little automatic dishwasher detergent in it then fill with hot water and let it sit overnight (or a day or so, as your schedule dictates). If you use the bleach or dishwasher detergent to sanitize, rinse it all out. Let dry completely before using.

Let us know how it goes!

I cleaned it with hot water and soap but there is still a line of dried ink so I'm letting it soak in water for a night. I'll try the bleach to kill anything left after I get out all the dried ink. Thanks for the help.

I'd also make sure you let it fully air dry for a few days (upside-down), as that will help kill whatever might remain.

You might consider household ammonia. It will remove the ink stains and kill the fungi.

Lastly, I'm a big fan of sunlight for such things. After all the washing and flushing I'd set it outdoors in the sun (with the cap off) and let sunlight have at it and dry it at the same time.

Any phenol-based disinfectant will also do the trick. If you don't want to go the phenol or bleach routes, a boiling water bath will also do just fine--just be careful to let the bottle cool gradually before filling so as not to break the glass.

Hot soapy water, and maybe even a touch of bleach. After a good rinsing it should be fine imho.

TRy cleaning with household AMONIA that should work or a citrus cleaner might also help to get rid of Mould

As both bleach and ammonia have been mentioned, please, please, do not mix them, or cleaning agents that contain them. Deadly combination.

Yes, the combination reacts to release chlorine gas, I believe. Not good.
