Hero 850

A cheaper Myu would be welcome. I've already broken the bank buying an original MYU 701 (date stamped with my birthdate!) and the M90 reissue.

It doesn't seem that this Hero is available anywhere online though. Wonder if we can make arrangements to have a couple shipped from Asia? :-)

Hi, these pens are pretty hard to find here too, however Enricof's comments about the materials quality on some of these pens should be kept in mind.

Very nice pen. Must get one to try out. Similar to Pilot Myu. Thanks for the review Hari.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!

Cheers,

Hari

I guess I'm coming late to this string, but I just managed to get one of these (all stainless, though, not black lacquer) and inked it a few minutes ago. I must admit that this is one of the smoothest, if not the smoothest, writer I have ever used! Time will tell whether it is hard to start up after standing and also whether I have any of the mechanical problems mentioned in the string, but for the moment, anyway, I am floating on air! And in all stainless, at least to my eyes, the integral nib really ties in with rest of the pen.

All the Best

Tim

I bought one of these from a member here, simply because I was intrigued by the design. It was a great writer, even thought the fine/medium nib didn't really suit me at all. No nib or flow problems at all. But I did suffer the same problem as Enrico with the barrel ring coming unstuck. No great problem rectifying that though. I sold it on as it was never going to be in my rotation because of the nib size but I'd certainly recommend you trying one - if you can find one!

Tim, Congratulations! May I request you to post some photos in this thread of this "all steel" variant. I am intrigued. What is the model number on the pen?

Hari

I have been asked to post pictures of my all stainless Hero 850 (yes, it is still an 850). Unfortunately, i am not set up with my digital SLR to take close-ups, and so used my scanner. The result is that the scanner gives one color to the glossy section/nib and another color to the barrel and cap which are satin. In reality, they are all the same color - I hope the pictures give you enough to imagine the actual pen.

I was also asked where I got it - I bought it on e-Bay from http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZclassicpencasesQQhtZ-1 I bought both a black and stainless one (waiting for the black), but don't think he has anymore left. The price was good, too, I think, at $20 each including shipping. I have bought several interesting items from this dealer, including a hard rubber Indian Brahman eyedropper, and he has always provided excellent service.

Is the body squared off, or is that just shadows from scanning? I was wanting a 849 for a good long while, I saw that an eBay seller is doing them - but with a conventional nib. I emailed at the time, to ask about the integral nib, he said they weren't made like that anymore (shame!) Maybe Hero didn't want to make two different models integrated. Anyway thanks for the tip re that seller, I'm sure with enough harrassment they'll get more of these unusual designs in.

To clarify the photos for Flounder, the body is not squared off, that is indeed shadows on the scanner - the barrel and cap cross sections are round.

Thanks to the all stainless steel find by Osmaroid, I set out to find some here and a resourceful pen seller in Bangalore could source some for me. Here are some pictures:

I also found a Wing Sung I believe, with a similar integrated nib. This nib does not have the brand scribed on it.

Hari, the full-steel Hero looks great (while the WS doesn't catch me).

If it writes as well as the green 849, I could seriously consider buying one, even after my past bad experience...

Ciao - Enrico

P.S.:

The Brahman-Deccan is really a great pen, one of us should find the time to prepare a review, maybe comparing it with the 149.

I have found the nibs on these pens to be fairly consistent in performance. I bought the Black Wing Sung to complete the collection, The cap on it is snap action instead of the clutch.

Regarding purchase, I will posting on the market place soon.

I am glad you think so, it is one of my favorites. I urge you to review it, I have already reviewed my share of(I think!) Indian EDs ;) .

Hari

A Frenchman would say "touché!", I guess...

Let's say I'm waiting for my two last Indian EDs (for one see my sig, for the second remember a certain G/T Deccan MP I discussed with you  ) to close the collection and for a "family review".

Well let me see what I can do towards completing your Indian pens family. The family review is incentive enough!

very nice and unusual pen ;) thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Hello. Hari

It says "Pai Dee" "Century-1A", "Patent No:003157628"

I found a Taiwanese website selling the same pen.

http://goods.ruten.com.tw/item/show?11090526952955

According to the description, Pai Dee is one the old fountain pen makers like Hero, Wing Sung etc..

Hope this helps.

I've bought two 850s from Hari. A s/s for me and a black one for my hubbie (don't ask me why but he only collects black pens!)

They are fantastic writers and so far we've had no problems with either.

Hari is a star to deal with, exceptionally fast service, very caring and great communications too, thanks Hari!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
