PR Ebony Green

I have mixed Sherwood and Penman in the past with no problems other than it just wasn't quite as satisfying because the sherwood changed the color a little. I don't think this stuff would.

Have you mixed the Ebony Green with Penman Emerald? Did it maintain the Penman shimmer?

You know, I haven't yet. When I get the current fill of my M200 down to about half I'll mix the two and see what happens. If a mix is safe and maintains the quality of EG (fast drying time, good lubrication) and imparts some of Penman's qualities, it'd be a great way to stretch my Emerald supply. Which probably means someone will inherit a couple of bottles of Emerald when I croak.

My ink level was low in the pen so I decided to go ahead and rinse it out and try a 1:1 Emerald to Ebony Green mix. I'll have my opinions on that at a later date. Want to make sure nothing explodes or goops up.

What I noticed however was something I couldn't fully explain but just goes to show you how we can't make blanket statements about lubrication/flow/feathering relationships. I mean things like "if it flows well it will feather" and "if it flows well it will lubricate well" and so on.

As I was initially checking the level, I did the typical thing (for me) of tilting my M200 up and down to see how much ink was in the reservoir. The remaining amount of Ebony green didn't move. It clung to the sides of the reservoir near the feed. Hm. A little unnerving at first. Is it drying out? Sticking? What? No, it just has high adhesion qualities in that volume. I rinsed the pen, all the ink rinsed out readily. I mixed the 1:1 mix which is rocking back and forth in the pen as Emerald usually does. So, while this ink (PR EG) flows quite well, yet doesn't feather, yet dries quite quickly for such a saturated ink, YET has excellent lubrication qualities - it "sticks" to the side of the pen when low in volume (more so than any other ink I've noticed.) Keep in mind this is an M200, not a converter where an air bubble could have caused this.

I just found it interesting. As I said, it rinsed out just fine.

Thanks, KCat! I look forward to your update.

Ah, maybe PR found Parker's ink formulas. First they copy Penman Sapphire and now Penman Emerald :) As said in the other review of the same ink, I need to try this one.

I just received my bottle of Ebony Green today. While I really like the color, it is easily the messiest ink I've ever used. Granted, I am using it with a Maxi Van Gogh which makes things worst, but its really bad. By the time I had filled the pen with ink and cleaned the section and nib, my hands were covered in ink. There was more green than skin-color! The problem is that the ink wicks into the paper towel I was using like crazy. Just a gentle, quick, wipe of the nib and the paper towel was saturated with ink. I've never seen anything like it. I'm going to use it for a while before I decide whether the color is really worth the hassle.

I hope that Ebony Blue isn't as bad because I bought a bottle of it too.

  • 2 years later...

this is an amazing color. it's a dark black-green, and nibs medium and up really bring out the color. i used this ink exclusively for organic chem I and II with a P51. this review reminds me that i need another bottle! thanks! :)

concerning whether this ink is messy, it's dependent on the user. i've never had a problem getting ink on my hand, and it's my most well-behaved ink in this regard. YMMV.

Fantastic. My own writing with this ink reminds me of a slightly (but only very slightly) brownish dark black-green. Mainly green, of course. Reminds me of the color of the water aoround me while scuba diving out west of L. A. Also known appropriately as the "Emerald Sea".

I think you've started a one man brand battle here Kcat.

I've spent far too much on pens this month, so next month will be limited to a couple of bottles of ink.

I've always wanted a darker ink than Diamine Woodland. But since I read this review, I've had web pages open, side by side, examining scans of dark green inks. This and several of the darker Diamines are front runners at the moment.

But I get paid on Thursday. So somewhere in the English speaking world, an ink manufacturer is going to thank you for this post.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
