Book Factory

Recommended Posts

I have started using a Book Factory (no affiliation) grid notebook for record keeping. I find their books well made with acid free paper, and lots of options. You can order the books directly from the Book Factory Web site. When you order, you can have your name put on the cover, and/or number the books, and you can also select different titles for some books. All at very reasonable rates.

The books are hard bound, and can range from 96 pages to 312 pages. Page styles differ with differnt grids, ruled, or just blank.

So far the paper works well with both Noodlers Black and Pelikan Black. I had some feathering with Noodlers Legal Lapis. My biggest problem is that I write extremely small, so I use XF or XXF nibs.

Just an option to check out, for those of you that are looking for something that you can get semi custom at very little additional cost.

I plan on these books being used for my journals, as they seem far more durable than the notebooks that I find at the office supply stores.

I emailed them to check on the paper stock and they replied the stock is not guaranteed to be OK with fountain pen. End of the line for me.

Guarantees are worth the paper they are written on, a few pennies in other words. I would credit a company that declines to unilaterally 'guarantee' their product to satisfy some nebulous, self-defined standard.

I have had mine for about a year now, and like wrote before, no problems with any inks that I used except for a little feathering with Legal Lapis.

I write on both the front and back sides, with black ink, and have no bleed through problems.

All in all, I am vey happy with mine, and have a second on order for use at work.

Yah that's actually a good thing for the company's image. I'd be suspicious about a company that guarantees their paper for FP work especially since they are supposed to be more interested in the lab/field survivability of their notebooks. Add to that their books have to be archival and show tempering.

Thanks for posting about these. I have been looking at the website for a while but couldn't make up my mind how I would want mine customized! And I wasn't sure about the paper. I was particularly interested in the larger sized one that can take a sheet of A4 pasted into it.

What would be the features of an ideal journal/notebook (I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere.....)?

Sailor Professional Gear GT B Nib

Sailor Sapporo GT F Nib

Pelikan M1000 (black) B Nib

Bexley Simplicity bronze GT B nib

Pilot VP blue/GT B nib

I use the large grid note book for record keeping, lots of serious details crammed onto each page. I just ordered a record book with ruled sheets for keeping notes for a new project at work. I greatly prefer hardbound covers that stand up well on book shelves and travel well.

I'm not complaining - just stating a fact. I appreciated their openness. Just ain't buyin' any for that reason.

I think the point people were making is that "guaranteed to be OK with a fountain pen" is a meaningless guarantee since the terms are so vague and variable.

My experience with their products (coil bound grid lab notebooks) is that the paper is very good with all my fountain pens and ink. Of course I do only use Noodler's ink, but its clearly superior to anything in an Mead notebook I've tried.

  • 6 years later...

I've been using a BookFactory notebook as a research notebook for years. I've been writing in it with a fine-nib Parker Sonnet and Noodler's Black ink. No bleed-though, and the pen is reasonably smooth on the page. The paper takes on ink fairly quickly, so it hardly takes any time at all for it to dry. The paper does have some texture, but it definitely isn't like sand paper. The paper has some rigidity, which is helpful since I can glue images into the notebook with a glue stick and not have to worry much about warping the pages.

The paper might not be Rhodia, but the notebook suits my needs just fine. I plan to buy another once I've completed my current notebook.

Tried one of theirs early this year. Medium and broad nibs bled through liberally.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
