Pewter Penholder

Did a couple of searches in all the Forums and didn’t see anything about penholders. I found some nice pewter, wood, and silverplated ones in places other than our usual purveyors. Some of you may think they are kitschy, like I did several years ago when I saw one in a pen shop in San Francisco, but I have changed my mind. They serve a purpose.... might as well do it with some panache. A couple of instances...

I was always taught to store fountain pens vertically, nib up. Is there no concern with these horizontal pen holders?

I've never experienced any problems of letting my pens sit horizontally. I personally think it's not necessary. It's kind of like when you read from your owners manual that you should only use a certain brand of ink to avoid damaging your pen...

IIRC (and someone please correct me if not), I think that was more of a concern for vintage pens as they tended to rely more on gravity feeds than the modern capillary action feeds. Also, it can actually be very helpful to store pens horizonaally - specifically, ones that tend to dry out when capped. This helps keep the nib wet so it writes immediately.

These look great on top of a desk in any office. I saw one once that had the "Scales of Justice" holding a pen. I believe it was in the Fountain Pen Hospital catalog. Many of their holders I believe have the pen sitting upright.

These are two of my favorite pewter Penholders, one is in gold plate.

I do, too. I wish I were a sufficiently gifted artist to make stuff like this. In lieu of that, I just put this one on my 2005-2006 wishlist. Let's see... St. Valentine's Day, Father's Day, Anniversary, Birthday... the family always says they can't get me anything because I buy everything I want. I guess I will give them until July. The latest. ;-)
