Another Rollabind Topic - cardboard covers

Rollabind has some leather cover and has the well-known translucent covers. The cardboard covers are intended for craft work. For the sort of thing I do, I really want something solid but don't want to spend a lot of money. The translucents are too flexible (nice and light if you travel but I don't.) Has anyone tried the cardboard covers? Are they as sturdy (or close to) as something like the coil-bound Black n' Red notebooks? I don't care about looks at all. This is purely about something strong enough such that I don't need a lap desk or clipboard but cheap enough that I can accumulate several as needed.

Yes, Kcat!!! I use the Rollabind cardboard covers. I use the ones in the Crafters' Covers Kits, available here: http://marcopaper.com/rollabindaccessories.htm

I cut 'em to size and make my sketchbook/journal covers out of them. I cover the cardboard with coated decorative paper that looks a bit better than the bare cardboard and (I think) protects the cardboard from stains, scuffs, greasy fingerprints, and so forth. I carry my sketchbook around in my bag every day, so it gets jostled quite a bit.

But the bare cardboard is very sturdy and not bad looking. Well, not too bad looking.

I'm sorry I don't know what a "coil-bound Black n' Red notebook" is, but the Rollabind cardboard covers are are definitely strong enough so that I don't need a lap desk or clipboard.

(More detail on my "Travel Sketchbooking" is here)

Let me know if I can provide any more info!

Thanks so much for the reply, Jan. The Black n' Red hardbound notebooks are about 3X heavier than a standard notepad backing - guessing. I love them for journals but for creative writing I really think I need something more flexible. Uh, not flexible as in physically but as in organizationally. :P

I have a lot of decorative paper (and am thinking of getting rid of a lot of it) so I should be able to find something to do the trick. I'm not picky about looks but if it will stave off water damage and the like...

Anyway - thanks again.

Best,
