I have one of these pens and i dont unscrew the nib before writing. why would you have to? The section is kind of uncomfortable but i really dotn mind this pen. I wouldnt buy it again but it still is an ok pen.

I have one of these and I agree, it isn't bad. Unless you compare it to other $40 pens. I got mine with a $25 loyalty coupon so it was well worth the $15.

 

I'm not sure I understand this review - it sounds like the reviewer didn't like the semi-hooded design, so she unscrewed the nib most of the way, and then wondered why it was loose, and why it wouldn't write, and why the cap wouldn't screw on...

 

I agree it's a very silly-looking pen, but if you leave the nib and section assembled as it was intended, there is no annoying gap or motion of the nib, the cap screws in, and it writes.

I was tempted to try out the Foray Fountain Pen at my local Office Depot, since my Lamy Vista is still being serviced on the other side of the continent . However, I've had lackluster experiences with their ballpoints and rollerballs. (I seem to have better luck with TUL, the OfficeMax house brand.)

 

Wow...$40...can't you get a Pilot Knight for that kind of money?

Actually, I just bought this one today, and I must say, it's flawless. Everything is where it should be, and it writes perfectly. Yes, the nib is made to be screwed all the way in, otherwise, it will just flop around without support. I think it just screws out for easy cleaning, so you don't have to wet the barrel, as it comes all the way apart.

A slick black incarnation of this pen was the pen that made me get into fountain pens seriously. It was so bad that I eventually broke down and bought a Pelikan M600, and the rest is history.

On the other hand, the three Foray disposables I got from OD (a blue, a red and a black) are great writers, and CHEAP.

For whatever it's worth, if you're reduced to going to Office Depot to look for a pen, the Yafa Cartridge Fountain Pens they sell for around $15 aren't bad pens at all. A little dish soap flush to clear mold release from the feed, load up a decent cartridge, and the medium point is pretty nice, plus they look quite good. Far more pen for far less money than the Foray. Foray ink cartridge, OTOH, seem quite okay, if somewhat overpriced (similar price to PR or Diamine carts, for generic ink).

I got one for twelve bucks in June, and I have to say it's pretty good. I was having some flow issues on my first cartridge because I didn't flush it before hand, but now I have PR DCSSB in and it's a nice writer. IMO though it is more of a fine than a medium - it writes finer than my Parker 45 and Vector medium nibs.

I do agree with you on the attractiveness of the Yafa pens, but I have to say the little IPG nib looks anemic compared to the girth and length of the pen.

I agree with you, there was no visible difference in the line from my Yafa vs. my Dollar 717i, with identical looking nib (slightly different stamping); the Dollar was sold as "fine" and the Yafa as "medium". Mine also had flow problems before I washed the nib and feed with dish soap and then flushed that out; after that, it was pretty close to perfect (but not perfect enough to avoid being traded for an Esterbrook J). I may have to get another one next payday.

 

I don't mind the look of the nib on the Yafa, but then I've never found gold that attractive from a visual standpoint, and I'm of the school that the nib exists to put the ink on the paper -- if it does that well, and isn't completely unsightly, I only notice it when it's covered with creep or when the pen suddenly stops writing.

I picked one up today for $19.99. It's my first fountain pen. I'm sure I'll outgrow it soon but it's at least as smooth as the Pilot G2 gel pens I've been using. Hopefully the Foray works for a while.

Yes, indeed. Avoid. I bought one at Office Depot. It is a POS. Someday it may become a useful frankenpen, and as such, decent.

I actually bought one of these things as well. I was thinking that it was an alright writer until I bought a waterman. I am however looking for a nib and feed for this pen. If anyone might know where to get one that would be appreciated.
