No doubt about this one: A very slightly used Platinum #3776 (PTB 40000#40) Cherry Blossom Maki-e by

Shinonome.

How much? Ninety-nine cents (plus a few dollars shipping) on eBay. :cloud9:

I've been fortunate to have several decent sumgai experiences. From estate auctions:

1. Parker Vac Major - Blue Azure in good+ condition; Parker Striped Duofold Senior - gold and green exc condition ; Sheaffer Sr Flat top - Jade fair condition; Diamond Medal - true blue fair condition but with a perfect #8 nib; all for $40.00

2. Waterman 452 good shape except no clip; Parker Vac w/lockdown filler green, missing the barrel jewel&tassie but a nice semi-flex nib; Eversharp Skyline standard - Gray exc. condition; Eversharp 5th Ave - good condition; Parker lucky curve bchr ring top but missing nib; all for $3.00 (that's three dollars)

3. Wahl OS Signature red hard rubber w/greek key chasing - good condition w/a hairline crack in the cap lip; Waterman 52 rhr ripple exc. condition; $6.00 each.

4. Wahl gf metal with a #5 nib - good+ condition - $15.00

5. Parker Sr Duofold - burgundy & black; Sheaffer long balance - jade w/stub nib - both for $14.00

There are more, but these are the highlights. Like I said - I've been fortunate, but I've also been to a bunch of auctions with nothing in the way of fp's - but the hunt is fun.

All of my pens were good deals, but these top the list, I think:

1. FREE Waterman (LeMan 100) Patrician, coral red.

2. FREE Waterman (LeMan 100) Sterling.

3. 20 bucks for a LeMan 200 on eBay.

#1 and 2 were gifts from friends.

Hey Annie, this :bunny01: is for you :ltcapd: !

Parker 51 with a broad nib for £5 ($10) from a car boot sale

Montblanc 142 - free because 'it's never worked'. Sent it to Richard Binder to fix the nib and stub it and it now works beautifully!

An offer at a discount stationary store last year, spend more than £5 ($10) and buy a fountain pen for £1 ($2) there was a box of new pens to choose from, some wooden :yikes: but another that was a no namer, maroon, all metal and a gold clip. A very dull finish which responded well to a polish.

Not a fantastic pen but it wrote just fine and looked like an OMAS Bologna

I bought 2 Lamy Al-stars and a Safari on ebay from the UK for $90aus. In Australia, to buy them from an online store it would have cost over $200 ($75 each Al-star and $50 for the Safari + postage). Im keeping one of the Al-stars for myself, gave the other to my dad, and im selling the Safari for $40-45aus on Ebay.

With a total of $20aus each for the Al-stars !

Most recently, the Omas Saffron Blue that I bought for $690 w/ shipping off eBay. It was the subject of this thread. I also bought a NOS Omas Bronze Arco for $650 w/ shipping (from Christian Fricke at www.comoveo.de). Both Omas Celluloids are out of production, difficult to find, and people always pay a premium for them. I gather to most people, I paid a premium as well, but they are my most recent best deals because they are scarce.

As far as "sumgai" finds, I scored a Visconti Vienna Rinascimento Solid Gold FP for about $345 w/ shipping off eBay. This is also out of production and was limited to 500 while in production. I found one at Altman Luggage a year ago (they only had one of the solid gold version, but a few of the silver), and the price was just north of $1900. Novelli quoted a price of $2200 (taking into account exchange rates). There's a Rinascimento RB is going for over $1000 w/ shipping (on eBay) at the moment.

Talking about fountain pens is like dancing about architecture.

Free 1927 Duofold Senior with a lapis body-- although this is a bit of a cheat because the friend who gave it to me paid $5 and I did have to put in some effort clearing the previous sac.

Kelly, got any pics of that Diamond Medal? I'd love to see that one.

Nice scores!

rroossinck, I don't have any with me and I'm away from home for another day or so. I'll try to get some pics when I get home.

My Tibaldi Impero. I got it more than a year ago, before the Tibaldi craze started. I bought it for $300, and they're selling on the bay for $500-$700 now. Regards,

David

I got my beloved 51 vac for 50 cents at an 'antique' store. It was in pieces, but $6 worth of parts and it has been one of my daily writers for about five years now.

This shouldn't really count, but I got my grandfather's '35 Vac after he died. This was about 15 years ago, and up until late last year, the poor pen was in a terrible state of disrepair. After $35 or $40, it was looking & working like new again! :D
