How do you try your new inks?

I really like the glass dip pen idea, will have to look into one. Normally I do a light fill in a pen 1/4 load of ink and try it out under writing conditions. If I have more than one ink I just grab another pen and another until I have all the inks in a pen to try out. If I love the ink, I wait until the pen is about empty and give it a full charge. If I hate the ink I still write until it is empty then flush out the pen.

Anyone try a quill or any other tubular objects?

I've found that a glass dip pen works best for me.

I have never done this, and I have a couple samples to try out. After you use an empty fountain pen as a dip pen, how do you clean it? Just rinse the nib (attached to the pen)? Flush out the pen?

I dithered about posting, as I know it makes me look very ignorant.

I just dip and rinse. I've also used toothpicks, q-tips, a quill pen, and yes, the trusty glass pen.

BTW, love your avvy.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Bought my son a dip pen (even has a cool black feather attached to the brass nib), so I use that to test colors. I have also used a Q-tip or a toothpick. I would really like to get a glass dip pen. They look so cool!

Nobody could possibly be mean to someone with such a cute avatar.

However you clean a regular pen, be sure to let it dry before dipping again. I think the standard here is 24 hours, wrapped in a paper towel. Otherwise you'll dilute the ink you dip in, slightly, and you'll dilute the ink you've picked up in the feed and won't get a proper sample.

Hee! Thanks!

Okay, will do. I've done the let-everything-air-dry-for-24-hours. That's after I shake the pen (or nib, if it's detachable) down into a carefully-held-several-thickness-of-paper towel. But I see your point about letting the paper towel wick anything else out.

By the way, those random paper-towel-ink-blossoms look pretty DARN cool. I send them off to pen pals---next time I 'create' one I'll have to scan it to post here.

I just fill up which ever pen has been emptied and cleaned most recently then just go for it! No method at all when I try new inks.

Currently using:

-TWSBI 530 Diamond Pink (F nib) - Diamine Teal

I just received an ink order, including samplers. So I have many colors to compare.

I was curious, how do you proceed when you want to try new colors! Use a dip pen (or regular pen as a dip pen)? Do a swap? Fill up a pen right away? Toothpick?

At first, I used one of my pen as a dip pen, but the cleaning between colors started taking too much time!

So, what options do you use?

I just use a old parker flighter as a dip pen, this way you get a decent 4 -5 lines and can get a better look 0of what they will look like in a document
