Fountain Pens for Young People

One of my wife's good friends has a son I like of because he's a fairly well behaved kid. He's learning cursive now. I think at some point in the late summer, I'm going to give him a Pelikano with an A nib and some washable ink. I think he and his mom will be coming down for a visit around then.

My 12 year old has a Sheaffer School Pen Cheryl Tyree gave him. I just bought a neat little Estie at an Antique Store that I am going to give my 7 year old when he is ready.

Any suggestions on what sort of nib you could use for a 7 year old "leftie"? It has a Gregg Nib right now.

G*ddamn an eyewitness anyway. He always spoils a good story

Personally, If the kid is old enough, I would recommend a Retro 1951 Tornado, or second the Pelikan Junior. The varsity pens are the surest way to turn someone off, rather than on. I tried them, and oh my god the bleed through and mess.

I imagine that if the kid is old enough, one of the Noodler's 4.5 ounce inks with bonus eyedropper pen would be a way to go. That's ink and a pen all in one, and it's a pretty good pen. You have to make sure the kid in question is careful enough to be trusted with permanent (or red) ink and is also mature enough to understand you must carefully unscrew the pen only when the ink is low enough and only to add ink.

I'd think an interested 13-14 year old could handle that.
