Visconti Burgundy

Here is a Visconti ink that I noticed has not been reviewed yet...

It is without a doubt my favorite red ink... even thought it is not really a red in the true sense of the color..

It is a beautiful burgundy.

I purchased this ink last year at the Philadelphia show. I needed an ink to match the new First Generation Burgundy Parker Vacumatic I had just bought..

Sam at Pendemonium and I went through the color charts and this was it...

I now use is predominently in my Lamy Vista with a xf nib and love the ink...

It is a nice flowing ink, with a good dry time and does not show any signs of feathering even on cheap copy paper...

The color is classy and definitely fits the description. It is a beautiful wine red... not too purple or too red... but nice...

In a slightly flexy nib or a maybe a broader nib you will get some color variation... not too much, but enough to be interesting...

Here is a scan of the ink on a Rhodia 5x5 pad using a Lamy Vista with a XF nib and a Hero 236 with a IPG nib...

Ooooo! I'm thinking that might go nicely with some pens I've got. I just opened one of the bottles of Visconti black that came with one of my pens awhile back. It seems to have a strong chemical odor as opposed to my Private Reserve. Has anyone else noticed this or has it gone "off"? :blink:

I am also a Visconti Burgundy fan. It is a richer color than some of the other burdundies I have seen. I do not use it exclusively, but it is right up there with my most loved burgundies. Why it gets so little attention here, I just can't figure.

 

I also really like the bottle. It has a nice deep well in its Aladin's lamp configuration. The bottle does tip easily, so I keep mine in its box. But it facilitates the filling of pens with ueber large nibs like my Pel M-1000's and Dolce Vita O/S. When the bottles get low on ink, I refill them from another Visconti bottle, or use them with other inks, like my Herbins (which have far too shallow bottles).

Thank you. I wondered as I hadn't used this brand before, but was getting quite a backlog of black ink from my burgeoning pen collection. :embarrassed_smile:

Nice review thanks! The visconti inks are underappreciated. Visconti blue has recently replaced Waterman Florida Blue as my everyday blue.

Thanks for the great review. You reminded me that on my VERY cluttered desk lays hidden a bottle of this stuff that's yet to be opened. I'll have to remedy that soon! I'm a big fan of Visconti's Blue (currently in a Conklin/Visconti Nozac Word Gauge LE) and their brown (currently in a Molteni/Bexley Celestial in chocolate ebonite). Hmmm . . . what pen to put it in???

I mix the Visconti Red (about 90%) with the Visconti Black (about 10%). The red goes in first. It looks the same as the pic in the original post. There is no chemical odor to it.

 

I can fine tune the color and depth of the red. A little too much black and it takes on a reddish brown color.

I've yet to try this ink, and now think I want to, but I must ask:

 

Does its color still pop out at you (like it does in this scan) if you use a junky paper, or a dry writer?

 

I have a lot of vibrant inks that become lifeless on a cheap paper or in a dry nib, but then other dark inks keep kicking you in your eyes no matter how you put them down on a page.

I periodically remove pics from my storage...

I think the Admins should have a FPN storage section for ink scans that does not load up personal storage.

That way members would not have to clear out their old scans to make room for other postings....

Most burgundy inks have disappointed me, but Visconti Burgundy is one that I like. Thank you, Tom, for posting the review.
