Platinum 3776 Celluloid

Hello All,

I wonder if someone might have some information about a recently-acquired celluloid 3776. I'll try to post pictures, but I think a verbal description might be good enough in this case. Here's why: the celluloid is a dead ringer (or close to it) for the striated Vacumatic Golden Pearl celluloid. As with other 3776 celluloids, the cap and barrel seams are clearly visible.

It's identical, in overall length and shape, to a friend's Koi pen. Its feed is different from that of the Koi, however; among other things, it has more of an ebonite look-and-feel, as opposed to plastic.

The pen is fitted with a music nib (its feed is different from that of my own black 3776 music-nib pen as well).

I can't seem to find any reference to this particular model anywhere. I'm hoping somebody will be able to shed some light on an extremely attractive (and for me, slightly mysterious) Platinum.

Thanks,

Jon

And would you mind sharing where you acquired this celluloid #3776 from? :hmm1:

I happen to collect #3776 celluloids, and would be very interested in this one :puddle:

Thanks.

Platinum stopped making that model eight or nine years ago, if I correctly recall. Either it was a slow seller or they ran out of material. They still sell the matching mechanical pencil. Pencils never sold well so that might explain.

Hi Shahrin,

More than happy to share the info - although I wish it were more helpful. This was a plain old eBay purchase: a listing with only one photograph, and a very "basic" description. Not being familiar with the model, I took a chance on the pen, and I'm glad I did. (If only all my eBay "gambles" turned out so well!)

This is truly a lovely pattern, with all of the translucency of a NOS Vacumatic. I hope you find one!

Best,

Jon

stan and tutelman,

Thank you so much for the information! It's awfully helpful. (Thanks, too, for the link to PlatinumPlace - a very interesting site.)

Whatever the reason for discontinuing this pattern, I find it beautiful. And I think the "cha" name for the color is charming.

One thing I omitted from my earlier post is the fact that the nib has the "JIS" engraving. Does that help to narrow down a production date?

Thanks again!

Jon

Not very specifically. JIS is Japan Industrial Standard, and JIS is aligned diagonally (from right top to left bottom) that means it was made sometime between 1950's and 2005. IF JIS is written from left to right holizontally it was made after 2005. But it sounds like Platinum stopped engraving JIS mark on the nib before 2005, so I will do some searching to see when they did.

Hello Taki,

Thank you very much for the information. On this nib the "JIS" is aligned diagonally, as you describe, within a circle.

I initially thought that the pen might date from the 1990s, but I wonder now if it might be earlier.

Cheers,

Jon
