How useful is the Lamy bottle?

I just discovered a 50ml bottle of Lamy black ink that I packed away a few years ago. When I went to fill my Rotring 600, I was surprised to discover that I was only just able to submerge the nib. It looks like the bottle is about half empty (or half full, for any optimists that might be reading). After a few more fills, it might not be possible to fill the Rotring anymore. It is probably already impossible to fill my Namiki VP.

My Lamy 2000, on the other hand, should have no trouble filling all but the last drops from a Lamy ink bottle. I wonder if a pen with a larger nib, like a Pelikan M800 or a Montblanc 149 can drink more than 1/4 of the ink?

Even with your 2000 you might have problems; though the nib is hooded, the feed is open behind the hood and air will get in there.

The Lamy bottle is supposed to be superior because it has a recessed area in the middle of the bottom of the bottle. However, I too wonder how effective this will be when it comes to the end of the bottle. You best bet is to transfer the last of the ink into a different container.

Very true, but the distance from the nib to the L2K vent is about half the length of the Rotring's nib. I think Lamy got the design right on their ink bottle, as long as you are using one of their pens. All bets are off if you use anyone else's pen.

No doubt it could be better. The roll of pen-geek-TP on the bottom isn't super-useful, either.

But on the other hand, is it not better than most of the alternatives?

I've got a 50ml bottle of Waterman ink here, and I suspect I could get more ink out of it with my Rotring than from the Lamy bottle. The L2K can probably draw equally from either.

Montblanc may be the king of ink bottles. It is too bad my Rotring hates the MB iron gall blue-black. Works great in the L2K though.

Bottles of Visconti seem quite practical, too.

I like the Lamy bottle. Heavy, unlikely to ever tip over, and the recess allows for filling with less ink in the bottle for a great many pens - just not pens with giant nibs (which I don't possess).

While having the blotting paper on the bottom isn't overly useful (espescially in a world filled with real TP), it does mean that you don't have to go get some absorbant paper to clean the nib after filling - as it's already there with the bottle.

Still, I can't complain about any ink bottles - there's a asthetic appeal to every one I have. Noodler's makes up for its highly utilitarian bottle with creative labels. Most use creative glasswork.

Lamy tries to be hard to tip over, and has the convenience of having its own blotting material.

Visconti Mushroom bottle is top-heavy and unstable. MB is the best bottle. Or vintage Pelikan, if you can find one.

That looks like vendor lock-in.

Somebody in this forum gave this advice: Keep that bottle in its box, while filling your pen.
