Advice on NYC pen shops?

jul

Recommended Posts

I am visiting New York city for several days. Which are the pens shops worth a visit?

I will be (mostly) in Manhattan and (less) in Brooklyn.

I am interested in both vintage pens and modern pens, and inks.

I would particularly like to visit pen shops that either have hard to find brands (e.g., special edition Diamine inks, Japanese pens, etc.); a lot of stock, to see first-hand different pen brands; or shops where the salespeople are pen enthusiasts. But other interesting shops may be OK too.

I live in Washington DC, where there are several pretty decent shops. So, I am not interested in standard shopping-mall shops of writing instruments with lots of showy leather journals made with dismal paper, gold ball pens, etc.

Any good advice?

Thanks

Fountain Pen Hospital is definitely a nice place to stop by, it's where I've gotten most of my pens from, but you can do better in terms of price. Altman luggage is great since they'll match and at times beat any price, easily those found in Fountain Pen Hospital. I've stopped by JOON as well but didn't get anything there, my friend got a Lamy Dialog 1 though. If you want to save money, Altman luggage is the place to go, if you want to browse around for a while go for Fountain Pen Hospital and I've heard Art Brown is good but have never stopped by as of yet. Nothing in Brooklyn I'm afraid, unless you know something I don't.

Others are:

-Art Brown (unbeatable prices and largest selection of modern pens and inks probably in the entire U.S.)

-Joon on Lex Ave (good dealer with a good selection of pens, some have had good experiences here, some only mediocre ones. I belong to the former group)

-Berliner Pens (only vintage, usual retail prices, limited hours, but has a good reputation)

I'll second fountain pen hospital (a misleading..and quite depressing...name for a fun place!), it's in a great part of downtown, and they have some limited edition inks (don't miss the Old Manhattan Black). Great prices.

If you're in mid town, art Brown is a good choice, they have all the inks, and a great selection of pens as well.

Joon does nothing for me, nor does Altman.

Enjoy our fair city. It really is the Center of the Universe!
