Your opinion of the terms "NIB" & "NOS"

I was just answering a post from fatehbajwa minutes ago and was talking about a New In Box situation where the dealer and myself didn't see eye to eye on the NIB condition the pen was in. I'd be interested to hear what your opinions are regarding what you consider NIB and NOS and what you would expect if a pen was described that way to you.

When a pen is described as NIB or NOS, I expect it to be pretty much unused. Being dipped, for test purposes, is fine, but if the pen was ever filled I don't consider it NIB/NOS anymore (unless it was done by the company).

When I sell a pen as NIB or NOS it is exactly what the terms mean..

The pen has never been inked or used (with the exception of dip testing, IF the customer asks or the factory did it)...

I will not even dip test a pen that is in that condition unless specifically asked to do so...

A NIB or NOS pen should be in the original box with the paperwork that it came with...

In fact I currently have a Parker 180 NOS that I purchased as part of a deal from a store that went out of business...

It has the orignal paperwork, press bar filler and a Parker cart under the pen... this is what NOS is...

The major difference between the terms is

NIB... this is most commonly a modern still in production pen that has never been used...

NOS... this is a pen that is out of production still in the original factory packaging and never been used

I'd have to agree with OldGriz. These are how I understand the terms. I don't mind if NIB or NOS pens are dip tested. If the seller is going to load the pen with ink (to test the filling system and write a few strokes with it), I also don't mind, so long as the seller discloses it and flushes the pen thoroughly before shipping it. Used means....well, used! ;)

Talking about fountain pens is like dancing about architecture.
