Pen accessories:What really do we use?

Ah,the joy of receiving that new pen!!! Tearing open the packaging to get to that precious writer!!!

But what about all of those accessories, papers, etc they give you??

Some companies are good at giving "usable" extras, such as a carrying case, ink, etc.

And usually the more expensive pens include some dandy goodies.

But i rarely use any of them.I have quite a few Omas boxes and all have that thin leatherette case.

Does anyone actually use these??

Maybe the ink supplied i understand.

What other goodies have you received in your new pen box that makes you happy???

And what do you wish pen manufacturers would include that everyone would like??

Once I received a small Lamy writing pad (in the region of 3" x 4") that was made out of very high quality, smooth, FP friendly paper. I was pleasantly surprised. I have bought two other 2000s new, though, and didn't receive a pad in those.

I have never bought a pen with accessories!

I bought a Sailor, I think it was a Submariner model, that came with a real nice polishing cloth with the Sailor logo on it. Then there was the Pelikan 605 with the ceramic pelikan pen holder which was functional durring the time I owned the pen.

I can think of two very nice and useful accessories: the kimono and the eyedropper for the Dani Trio Mikado. I cannot live without my carrying cases; I have three: for two, three and four pens. The most convenient, for me, is the latter. I also use every now and then the soft cloth I received from the Omas Society to clean up my pens.

I haven't really had many accessories (at least not that I can remember), from memory the brass pen case and cartridge holder with my Targa Imperial Brass LE and the bottle of ink that came with my Tortoise Pelikan M400, in the nice (but rather crushed) retro Gunther Wagner box.

Oh nearly forgot the Sheaffer Connaisseur with the brass desk stand, the Legacy II with acrylic pens stand, Parker 51 SE with whatever bits came with that, a Parker Duofold set with a nice maple box and last but not least a Pinstripe Duofold with box etc (oh well rather more than I though really).

Can't say I actually 'use' them apart from the boxes to keep the pens in, the Pelikan ink bottle is one of the nice ones with built in pen stand and looks too nice to open until I desperately need the ink (but I have another anyway).

Yep, I've got gallons of Visconti black [well, mayble a slight exaggeration, but it feels that way to a woman who rarely uses black] from all my pens. But the leather 2 pen cases that came with my Xezos are getting the most use so far. Krone and Stipula gave felt covers that quickly get nasty in a woman's purse. The Yard O Led leather sleeves are a hair too tight for easy regular use.

The Delta Oversize black pen rest and ink placeholder is useful, and when the pen came back from Delta to sort out feed troubles it sat in a nice velvet sleeve that may not last forever but is handy.

The Cosmos Enigma case looks 'stellar' in the pictures, but is almost too tacky in real life to look at. The wood in the case is great, but their 'sky' is made from plastic and the stars are printed on. Now, all I really want is a sturdy box to get the pen delivered in, but when you know the price includes a de-luxe box I'd have hoped for a bit better. Have to admit I nearly bought another of their pens pertly because of the box. So far resistance has been effective. Buy a specialist box instead.

I would like my pens to come with:

1) A nice box and a paper doc re the pen and company

2) A little pad of FP friedly branded paper

3) Some ink

4) A little mini desk stand

5) A leather holder of some sort

6) A branded polishing cloth

This would make me happy. But alas I have received some ink, a pad, er and once a shop owener whom I bought a pen off gave me a case as a sweetener...

I've never used accessories that came with a pen. I did purchase and use frequently a 3 pen leather travel case. I keep it in my laptop bag and with me during business travel.

Ditto, including the Libelle 5 pen carrier which I got at a very nice price I think at FleaBay. The cloth I use is the one DaniTrio and Montegrappa brought with their pens.

I stash the box and papers my new pens come with in the bottom drawer of the military chest in my study. All my pens, new and vintage, are stored on my desk in a lined box made by Don Fluckinger from cedar cigar boxes. The latter also helps me conceal my cigar stash from SWMBO as she has become used to seeing a cigar box filled with fountain pens that she doesn't ask me what's in the other cigar box in my desk drawer. Simply put, I'd prefer the FP manufacturers and vendors to focus on the FP and not clutter things up with "free" gimmes when I purchase a pen.

To be honest, I've NEVER received ANY 'accessories' with any of my pens. The only things that came with the pens were the boxes (which are neatly lined up on my desk for all to see!!). All/any ink which I buy, I always buy seperately.

Ink, Nakaya's kimono and pen rest, blotting paper, and polishing cloth is what find most useful.

Since 1957, I have had three new pens, all gifts. None of them came with accessories. The hard boxes they came in are nice and sturdy, but mostly useless. I have stashed them somewhere.

Other desk accessories that I use are: a pen plinth, a rocker blotter, a Victorian style inkwell, and a bisque tile for grinding stick ink. People who know I'm this heavily into pens and pen stuff don't buy me pens and pen stuff -- it would be like buying Grandma a new set of knitting needles. I don't buy more pen stuff for myself because I already have what I need. More pens? Perhaps, but after buying a vintage Sheaffer Balance, :puddle: it ain't likely.

One of my last pen purchases came with ink, which I thought was real nice. All the other stuff is just fluff to me.
