Which bullet-proof blue-black?

Recommended Posts

I am looking for bullet-proof blue-black ink for my Waterman Philéas blue-black-marble fountain pen. It seems I have two alternatives:

  • Noodler's Ink Legal Lapis (Pendemonium exclusive)
  • Noodler's Ink Prussian Blue (missing-pen.de exclusive)

Well, which one I should choose? Do you have any opinions?

There are about a billion reviews of legal lapis (it's very well liked, though I sold my bottle, so tastes vary) -- I think you should choose the prussian blue and write a review. ;)

I have not tried Legal Lapis, but I have a bottle of Prussian Blue. I do not consider it a blue-black. Personally, I find it a little too washed out to use by its self and have mixed it 1:1 with Visconti Blue for a good mostly waterproof blue. If you want it as a blue-black, you would have to mix it with some Noodler's Black. I mixed up a batch that I like at a ratio of 1:5 Black to Prussian Blue.

You might also consider Noodler's Ellis Island (a Fountain Pen Hospital exclusive). The color is very much like a traditional blue-black. There have been some reviews.

The Prussian is very washed out and "chalky". It doesn't come out looking brilliant or deep and clogs most of my pens. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I second the recommendation for Ellis Island (Fountain Pen Hospital exclusive). I loaded it a Parker "51" and its wonderful. Good blue-black color and in my water test it did not run off or rub off when run under the tap for 30 seconds.

I don't suppose you'd post a sample of this? I have been very curious to see what it looks like. Thanks!

It is not bullet-proof.

Have you tried Swishmix Tahitian Pearl-it's similar to the LL, however more intense and dark and flows very freely. It's bulletproof and dries quickly.

I don't like either ink.... because they both have a greenish cast to them, as do many blue-black inks available on the market today.

This is what Chuck Swisher himself told about those Swishmix inks in alt.collecting.pens-pencils after making a phone call to Nathan Tardiff himself:

"All of the Noodler's Swishmix inks except for the True Rouge would have their bulletproof qualities reduced by approximately 20%. In other words, these inks are made with at least 75% of one of the Noodler's "bulletproof" inks and cannot be removed from paper without destroying the paper. The True Rouge might be erased with bleach, but it would also remove any watermarks in the paper so you could tell it had been tampered with. Hope this helps."

Speaking of mixes, I use a mix of bulletproofs to make a bulletproof blue black: New Old Bishop Street Blue Black. Deep, and a bit conservative, but I guess that's what blue-black is about... Just a possibility.

Quite interesting mix, but that Upper Ganges Blue is right now temporarily out of stock in Pendemonium. But I am going to buy that ink, anyway, because I am going to find good bullet-proof blue ink, too. Luxury Blue is chalky and Legal Blue is too greenish.

Interesting. I don't in general like the greenish cast to a lot of Noodlers' darker inks, and while legal lapis doesn't do it for me, Tahitian pearl I find to be a really nice color, which to me is a great match for the color of a Tahitian pearl.

I just made a dicovery. Noodlers Bullet Proof Black Ink is only bullet proof depending on the type of paper you use. I just wrote 2 letters on German staionery and 1 letter showed a smear I couldn't figure out what made it since the ink was dry. I dabbed a little bit of water on a paper towel and it washed almost completely off. I tested it on some other paper and it did not smear or wash out. I guess it could be the celuloid content in the paper. Noodlers claim it that once it is on the paper, the celuloid in the paper makes it permanent.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
