Esterbrook Cutaway

As I recall it, an SJ is exactly what you describe: almost identical diameter to a J, just shorter (while the LJ is the same length as the SJ, but skinnier). And with the barrel the same diameter, I don't know why an SJ wouldn't have a sac support, same as a J.

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

Zeiss, SJ and LJ are the same diameter. LJ is about the same length as a J; SJ is shorter.

Thing is, looking at my J's, they don't have consistent lengths--one J can be a tad shorter than another J.

 Well if that don't buy the farm...

I knew the barrels of the SJ's and LJ's were skinnier, that's why the cap jewels are the same as the barrel jewels. I never knew about the inconsistency.

Hmm- I called it an SJ because it's a little shorter than my J, but bigger than my LJ. I just called it based on the pics on esterbrook.net. What I removed looked a lot like the support in my J. What I dug out was hard, clear plastic. Like I said, it looked like glue to me, but it was more regular and clear than glue. Also, I was never able to remove the whole thing- its base won't budge. So what would be shorter than a J, but the same girth?

Sorry, no pics- can't find my camera at the moment.

Thanks!

F

Deffinitely get pictures when you can. I wonder, can you fit a very small xacto kife down to the remaining piece to cut it out? You have to be very careful, of course, but a good sharp hobby knife may just be the thing to get that piece out. Then you can address the question of whether to replace the shelf or get a bigger sac. The shelf was there to make the filling system more reliable, so if you can get one from Farm Boy, perhaps, it might be the better way to go.

  • 7 years later...

I came across this demonstrator as part of a batch of stock from a store shutting down - it clearly shows the workings of the lever and the sac is still pliable / working.

The only other reference is a different model of esterbrook fountain pen a J model i suspect (any help in identifying would be appreciated). There is a link on this website but the pen i have is slightly different - will upload photos on here.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
