Hello All,

 

I got a tad bit bored today and decided to play with my inks.

 

This is the plan:

 

I have written the names and colors of every ink that I own on Clairefontaine paper. I've allow the ink to dry completely. (Ink was applied very generously with a very broad italic dip nib, you wouldn't want to use this as a color chart as the true color will vary greatly with a regular size nib) Tonight I will soak the pages in water and in the morning we will see which inks survived!

 

What inks do you think with survive the night??

Hi Bryan,

 

Nice little challenge, but next time you do get bored, why not a little ink review? :lol:

 

Anyway, I'll give it a go.

 

I think the red black will wash out partly, leaving the black behind, maybe with some brownish undertones.

 

The Legal Lapis will survive, obviously, and most of the Platinum Carbon Black, provided it has dried properly (but I guess that is true for all of these inks :D).

 

Maybe some of the Visconti Black too.

 

The Aircorp Blue Black, the Wallnut and the Midnight Blue will survive partly, provided the black in there is Noodler's Black.

 

I am not too sure about the PR inks, but I reckon they will wash out, as will the MB, Pelikan and remaining Noodler's inks.

 

So, now it is the long wait... :D

Hi Bryan,

 

Well, if I was really putting money on anything it would be the Legal Lapis that's sold as waterproof. :) (I soaked a page of Clairefontaine with 4 of the waterproof Noodler's...Verdun, Aquamarine, Hellbender & Eternal Brown for 5 1/2 hours and the water didn't faze them.)

 

The Platinum Carbon ink may do OK, and I've heard that Noodler's Red Black, while not waterproof, has some water resistance. The others I have no idea about.

 

While not on your list, I've read that Mont Blanc Blue-Black has fairly good water resistance, too--someone on Pentrace did a test (but it was for a much shorter time period than overnight.)

 

I'll be interested to see the results you get!

What I don't understand is why Wim said of the Aircorp, Walnut and Midnight Blue that they would survive IF the black in them was Noodler's black. Who else's black would be in them? :blink: I guess maybe Nathan could make those colors from scratch without the cellulose fixing ingredient, rather than doing as we would and combining already existing Noodler's products. Is that what you had in mind, Wim? I hate to think outloud like this. It's kinda like talking to yourself. :lol:

Ah, well, it is just a guess. They may not have black in them at all, just very dark colours. And the Midnight Black is a Fast Dry colour, so has a different formulation. It is not based on normal (waterproof) Noodler's Black I think. But then, I could be mistaken. I guess I could just try it myself (have the ink, but the bottle is still unopened. Too many other inks... :D)

I guess I answered your question already :D. And you do know, Roger, talking to yourself and thinking out loud is the stage prior to muttering to yourself, after which follows mumbling with your mouth closed to yourself? All different stages of progressive, umm, you know, the stuff that comes with old age :lol: <GDR>(again) :lol:

I guess that depends upon what you mean by "survive the night." If you mean "still be readable", then that would be fewer than if you mean "show no ill effects at all." Assuming you mean "still be readable," I'd guess

 

Noodler's Aircorp, Legal Lapis, Walnut, Swisher Midnight Blue, and Platinum Carbon.

 

 

BTW, I have no experience with PR, MB, Platinum, Visconti, or Pelikan inks.

Private Reserve inks will hold out, Pelikans are gone. Montblancs are gone, and the Noodler's should hold up. Should be interesting to see the results. I know my Black Magic PR did very well in a total submersion test. Whereas the Pelikan Brown disappeared almost entirly even with a candle sticked test!

Legal Lapis, Platinum Carbon, and Swisher Midnight Blue. I did a similar test about a month ago with Waterman, Parker, PR, and Aurora inks. I also had a bottle of Legal Lapis. The Aurora Black and Legal Lapis were the only inks clearly readable after a nine hour soak. The Legal Lapis looked just about the same post soak as it did pre soak. This will be interesting because I don't have most of the inks your testing.

Regarding the discussion elsewhere about the green tint in AirCorps Blue Black, this sample, at least on my screen, looks quite greenish to me.

Hello All,

 

Here are the scans of the ink samples after 13 hours of soaking in cool tap-water. There were a couple of surprises that I'll comment on later. Right now I had better get ready for church!!

This is pretty impressive for Noodlers Aircorp. I'm getting convinced to want to try it as my second (to Noodlers Black) ink for legal type documents.

THANKS for the very interesting test results. Looks like the darker Noodler's colors do indeed have some Noodler's Black Eternal Ink in them after all. Noodler's Red-Black is fairly readable, while Aircorp, Walnut, Legal Lapis and Platinum Carbon did very well. Some of the PRs weren't too bad either - almost as good as the Noodler's Red Black. Very interesting indeed. BTW - great layout, putting them side by side like that. GREAT JOB!!!

Thanks Bryan--I'm glad these messages are archived and we can come back to your ink test. Side-by-side was a very good/helpful way to display the results, as Southpaw mentioned. Glad you thought of it!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
