expensive Tibaldi Impero auction on fleabay

This seller looks fishy to me.

There was a time when Regina Martini sold Imperos on Ebay for about $300 each (that's where I got mine). Now this seller wants to max the money out of this sale. He or she also clearly misrepresents the facts when he states that the Impero was made in a limited run of only 98 pens.

Plus, you don't get to see if this pen bears the original engraved HT nib or one of the later gold nibs.

Tibaldi Impero auction

I know that these pens are the hardest to find among the three popular Tibaldis (Iride, Modello 60, Impero). There were other Tibaldis that are almost impossible to find (Modello 60 in another color different from the ubiquitous blue-white, then a green Tibaldi with rounded edges etc...)

Nonetheless, the price is steep, to say the least.

I guess they're phobic about collecting Florida sales tax too. Didn't look, but they must be down state. Up here it's only 7 1/2%

Okay one thing on here that bugs me is the shipping weight 10 POUNDS! What is the pen incased in, lead? A marble box? I mean I can not see the packaging being 10 POUNDS.

Anyone have this pen and can verify the weight of the packaging, I am quite curious about this now.

Cheers.

The weight is probably another attempt to puff up their profit margin. I really dislike people with 'handling fees' that end up being 10 times the actual shipping cost.

It does come with a heavy wooden box but I don't think that box weighs 10 pounds.

Just because the guy has a starting bid a couple hundred to high, misrepresented the pen, didn't give decent pics, and over charges for shipping doesnt mean he's a bad guy. :ltcapd:

That box is heavy. It is a drawer box made of maple wood, containing a bottle of ink, too. The drawer has a division for seven pens in its lower compartment. The first runs of the Imperos came also with a book. So the weight is not completely misrepresented. I don't have a scale or the book, but a weight of at least six pounds or more is possible.

Also, the original name of the (second) Tibaldi Impero which was made in 1998 is "Impero 36-98", to comemorate the first model of the same name from 1936. Maybe this made the seller to believe the false number of models made.

Thanks Saintsimon. That was what I was looking for, information. I have a solid mahogany chest, with drawer, that holds 20 plus pens and even with the pens it is less than five pounds. But with a book and ink I could see it pushing 6 maybe 7, so I guess the other 3 could be packing material. Still seems a bit excessive, maybe he was guessing.

Here's a scannned excerpt from the booklet that came with my unengraved, numberless, but white nibbed Impero.

Pens Plus is Allen Gross, a long standing member of the collecting community. His pricing is premium and he focuses on modern pens. He just made a mistake on the Tibaldi history is all.

No bids on it with about 3 hours to go. It must be that incredibly tempting low start no reserve amount :yikes:

I've gotten a few good heavily discounted pens from Allan over the years, but this Impero is extremely overpriced even if it has the full barrel imprint and rhodium-plated nib. On his website he has the pen listed for sale at $2000!

The only other Impero on eBay is even more, $795. If they're the same; I don't know the subtleties. I have had the pleasure of selling a few Tibaldis on consignment on eBay and they are indeed beautiful pens. And the boxes are heavy, though like others, can't say if they're ten pounds.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
