I’m proper terrible at introductions, but figure I ought to try to follow along with decorum.

I’m from a far flung corner of the world where life is a bit slower, but fountain pen enthusiasts are in short supply (an island in remote/rural Alaska). I spend my summers as a marine biologist and when winter makes the sea a bit too rough (or frozen) I help out at the local bookstore and newspaper (I get to print on a newspaper printing press from the 1960s). I like a good walk in nature, and anything to do with fountain pens and ink and paper arts.

I have no idea when I fell into the rabbit hole of fountain pens, but I appreciate everything from the mechanics to the aesthetics, and I’m content to stay. My only issue is that my ink collection is a little out of hand- but I’ve recently discovered calligraphy nibs and attempting to make nice looking capital F and Y might finally use them up.

Hi, and welcome to FPN.      :W2FPN:    I'm sure you will enjoy this friendly forum.

Greetings from Pittsburgh, PA!  :W2FPN:

My uncle and aunt lived for a number of years outside of Anchorage, but I've never been up there, although I do remember one time when I was growing up where my uncle called my parents on Christmas Day and said that it was WARMER up there than it was where we lived -- 50 miles north of NYC -- and up there they were worried about the permafrost melting!

I generally suggest that new folks here click on the "New Content" button when they log in (you can adjust how much/often it refreshes).  And to look at the pinned Index to the Ink Reviews (even though some old images were lost, many in the "Great Photobucket Hijack" a few years ago) because I'm convinced we live in the "Golden Age" of ink, with new companies popping up all over the globe and with all sorts of colors and formulae (iron gall inks, inks that sheen, inks with glitter in them, etc.) in all sorts of colors (my husband tells people that the pens were just the "gateway" to the ink collection).  But I also warn them that they've found their way into a den of enablers, who will happily help them spend their discretionary funds on pens, inks, paper, desk accessories, repair tools, pen shows, and ephemera....

Have fun here and remember that the only dumb questions are the ones which don't get asked (the search function is a little flaky at times).  I'm constantly amazed at the depth and breadth of knowledge to be found here -- and not just pen-related at that!  And humbled by the generosity of the people on here in the sharing of that knowledge.

:W2FPN:     Personally I only use Blue and Black, (boring, I know), but there are many ink enthousiasts in the Forum !

Anyhow welcome to the Fountain Pen wonderland, and our lovely little rabbit hole. You have now fallen and will always be trapped like a cosmic black hole there is no way out. You can check out any time, but you can never leave

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
