Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Yunjingtang Daydreaming of a Beauty

This is review #373 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This ink from China was gifted to me by a generous FPNer. My apologies for not including the Chinese name of this ink-my database language doesn't support double-byte characters, nor do I know how to write them properly. Please see my inks spreadsheet which now has a tab with both the Chinese and English ink names. This is a chroma-shading ink. Since this attribute can be less stable over time, I'm reviewing all of them out of sequence.

After a long-enough time idle in the pen, the ink is grey in the vial and on the slide, a muted pinkish-purple on my swatch card, but a lovely purple on the CRENA swatch card paper (inset on the card). The ink comes out onto the paper grey, but goes pinkish-purple as it dries! And the scanner hates it! So do cameras.

The only close representation is the text at the bottom of the video thumbnail!

Cleaning was ridiculously easy.

Erratum: "It leans red."

Zoomed in photo (The microscope wouldn't pick up any color, so this is all wrong.)

Screenshot (The camera wouldn't pick up the color in the writing at all, so this is all wrong. It's also too dark.)

Scan of Completed Review (The scanner made the ink a saturated purple purple. Nothing like reality. I corrected the color as best I could. It's probably still a little too saturated, but it's as close as I could get.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (AP: Kind of close, but not really. CP: The camera didn't pick up the color at all, though I can easily see it in person. The color is similar to that on the AP, but a little darker.)

Line width (Roughly 276µm. The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. With 373 inks measured, the average line width is 299µm.)
large.YunjingtangDaydreamingofaBeautyLW.jpg.9e945ace62e92157878d0234496533dc.jpg

Swatch card comparison (Cameras/scanner hate this color. Scabiosa is a little too red. Purple Rock is much too saturated. Daydreaming needs to be a little redder and less saturated. Poussière de Lune should be a little bluer! I give up!)
large.YunjingtangDaydreamingofaBeautyCompare.jpg.1d2b9c5c977a59d0c9968e180c5c1966.jpg

Microscope image (400x. This was after a short time on the slide (minutes, hours, I forget). At some point, the grey part turned lavender and the "rock with embedded gems" part disappeared.)
large.YunjingtangDaydreamingofaBeautySmear.jpg.613560f654c073376154eaca6726d2ca.jpg

Alternate Papers (All three made the ink darker. The scanner made them super-saturated blues. After adjusting, Clairefontaine and Life are close to what I see. Iroful is still too saturated in the image.)

I did indeed enjoy, @LizEF.

Skweeek!  Groan.  Moan.

Elusive color.  One-eyed dragonfly trying to make off with the biggest slice of cake in all IceWorld.

I do have Possiere de Lune, rarely use it.  Not a purple fan, and I have no craving for this Beauty, but this was, as always, a fun and interesting read.

The story's a nail-biter!  I'm hoping Etthhri and everyone really is in a tavern, enjoying some hot buttered rum.  🐍 🧙‍♀️ 🪶

Thanks for making this snow-covered Tuesday magical and fun... I always look forward to the review and story!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

 My guess is the skweeek was Klaw - he's usually the squeaker and Smoke is more the yowler.

Very camera-shy.  I can usually see the abstracts once you point them out, but I'm not seeing the dragonfly.  I think I see the cake, though. :)

 Thanks! It's very cool to watch it go from grey to purple - inverted iron gall, as it were - but otherwise, not terribly compelling.  I'm sure it would be much nicer in a big broad firehose of a nib. :)

Great review @LizEF.

It took me some time to figure out if this was a grey or purple ink. :D When I was reading & re-reading your notes, it reminded me of iron gall ink or reverse as you so aptly put it. The fact that it seems unstable confirms that. ;)

I loved the story line, one of your most inspired ones. Action through magical poetry. 👏

Thanks for bringing beauty in a world, where we seem to have forsaken Beauty. 🙏🙏🙏

Yeah, very disappointing that the camera wouldn't pick up the purple - it's rather pretty.  I might try with a broader nib because the reverse-iron-gall behavior would be cool to capture.  (I don't think this is any less stable than the average chromashading ink. It's just camera shy.  Of course, I have no idea whether the color change is a sign of instability, so maybe it is less stable - heaven knows! :)

:) You're most welcome!  And only the media and crazy people have forsaken beauty - the majority of us still pursue it - we're just not as loud! ;)  Hope yet lives.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
