Pig in a poke or rather a Parker set in a poke

"Silver Parker pen set in box."

This advertisement appeared in the New Zealand equivalent of EBay.

With just the below picture.

The photo did not really help except the pen, pencil and ballpoint were Flighters with one with a crooked clip.

I am not particularly enamoured with flighter pens but I was keen to get a three piece box.

No other bids meant I now own the set.

I had imagined/guessed it was Parker 45 set but no it was a Parker 65 pen set with gold clips.

It is has a convertor, grey jewel and a what seems to be a fine gold nib.

Flush of water and it writes very nicely

The crooked clip was just a loose jewel screw which was easily fixed and what seemed to be work markings disappeared after a light cleaning.

The pencil works as it should and is .9 lead which suits me nicely as I already have that on hand.

While the pen has issues ( the threaded connector part is not the right length, seems to be broken off) I am well happy with hopefully my last Parker pen  purchase for the year?

Paid $16 US delivered.

@Ray59 Whichever it is (and since I'm not familiar with the 65 model, I would have probably also pegged it as a 61 because of the arrow on the hood) I'd definitely say that you're in the running for "Sumgai of the Week"!

Definitely a Parker 61 England made C/C but no markings to indicate this.

"Sumgai" is a new one for me but Google explained it perfectly.

I surmise from various clues that the seller works in an op shop, picked this up cheaply, brought it home, took a poor picture with a vague discription "Parker silver pen set" and set an auction off.

I saw it, got Google to try to identify it, studied the pricing, how to polish and clean it and fix bent clips. Waited to the last hour and banged in a minimum starting bid.And acquired the set for $20 NZ.

My point is anyone, thanks to the internet and that device in our pocket can be "that guy" or at least link with all the other smart guy’s/women's expertise.

My question is when would this set be made?

Clues being the grey jewels, and it being a c/c with my guess 1969.

At that time I was doing practical work for the two years before going to university and was earning $14 NZ a week plus keep which would have made this set a big leap for me.

I hadn't been familiar with the term "sumgai" either, until I found my way to this forum.  And apparently it comes from this hobby!  As in, "I went to an estate sale and asked if they had any old pens, and got told that there had been some, but 'some guy'/'sumgai' had been through earlier and had bought them all...."

The box on its own is worth the purchase price.
