47 goose (2. The incident)

The incident, newly unearthed in the marginalia of Dom Lobo’s memoirs, concerned a minor dignitary, Gonçalves, whom João misnamed ‘Gansolves’ (ganso = goose). Whether this confusion contributed to the subsequent faux pas is unclear.

João forbade, and Lobo suppressed, further speculation.

INKTOBER52 PROMPT NO.49 IS “GATOR”

I had a dream last night about some man with a pet alligator. It was still small, say under three feet. But the mouth still opened wide.

Yes, there's a chance of catching up before the next prompt. But first, a stupid joke:

47 goose (3. Diplomatic consequences of the incident)

Dom Lobo, speaking through a neutral intermediary, conveyed a number of observations concerning Gonçalves’ regrettable and untimely incursion.

He then added, bluntly and off the record: “Estás frito” (roughly, ‘Your goose is cooked’).

@christof That was a fun one!

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

48 Sagittarius (4. Incidental dreams)

Although João tried to forget the incident, his dreams — as he later confided to Dom Lobo — developed a recurring archery motif.

To Lobo, Jungian before the fact, the arrows signified anger, focus, and intent, while the choice of an activity in which the king was neither interested nor proficient suggested ambivalence. Meanwhile, the dream’s accuracy about his inaccuracy hinted at a commendable measure of self-awareness. Perhaps the effort was the reward.

A Jungian dream masquerading and hunting a goose, dreaming of a garrulous gator that would expand on the deeper meaning of the dream of a king reduced to pig, who spends his time with worrisome wolf..... ;)

49 gator (5. Incidental anxieties)

The king’s dreamscape mutated in ways that resisted Lobo’s interpretation. João was both Gonçalves and himself, pursued and pursuer, torn between dread and retribution.

Dom Lobo was confident, however, that the creatures João mistook for alligators were — in a Brazilian context — most likely caimans.

Another idea for this prompt is proving intractable. Fortunately, Yazeh mentioned Belém (the Portuguese one), which led to some reading about the Brazilian one.

Ink scribble rescued in Procreate.

46 sneaker

Returning from the interior near Belém with a small sheet of borracha defumada (1) Dom Lobo believed he had solved an all-consuming problem. Slippers (2) soled with this material would let the king pilfer pastries in the dead of night without a sound.

Unfortunately, in Rio’s heat the rubber softened and adhered to every surface it touched. Lobo advised delay.

João, eager for stealthy snacking, commanded "Apenas faça” (Just do it) but immediately regretted it.

1 Borracha defumada, made using indigenous smoke-curing methods, yielded a brown, leathery material, more durable than air-dried latex.
2 The slippers bore João’s stylized J monogram, later the basis for an unsuccessful lawsuit against a well-known maker of athletic equipment.

@catbert so that was how that scene plagiarized from the collective unconscious of João? :D

It seems that it took them 6 takes to get it right:

This explains how João's alligators became Lobo's caimans became Bond's crocodiles. :)

I would need more than six takes if I hadn't resorted to digital (and there's still stuff I want to rework) ...
