So many different ways of creativity, is so refreshing. FWIW, I prefer the coloured version, I love the contrast of blue, back and yellow.

Inktober 2025 - Day24 - Rowdy

Inspired by the “rowdy” Stanley Kowalski from A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), reimagined through my cat & mouse theme.

Thank you! If there's one prompt this month I'll revisit it's probably this (a version 3 already exists but it's worse).

Your firefly picture is absolutely beautiful — the use of white lines is especially evocative.

And thank you for yours! It's brilliant.

(This year really has been work — I'm barely keeping up.)

24 rowdy

To the Portuguese court, with its arcane protocols and procedures, the brash manners of the  American envoy left something to be desired. Nevertheless, João found ways to accommodate cultural differences.
Based on a true story.

Although ‘rowdy’ did not enter Webster’s dictionary until 1832, shortly after the reign of João, it was already in use as early as 1808. So, while Joao could not have read the word ‘rowdy’ he might have heard it from a visiting American. This line of reasoning led to a description of a diplomatic incident in Rio, c. 1810–11, when newly arrived envoys and the transplanted Portuguese court were still learning one another’s ways:

“It was a rule of the Court that upon the passage of the royal family bystanders should uncover, and persons on horseback should dismount. Sumter [Thomas Sumter Jr, US ambassador to the Portuguese court, 1810–19] complied to the extent of removing his hat, but refused to get off his horse. The easy-going Dom Joao was undisturbed by his breach of etiquette, but not so Dona Carlota Joaquina, his impulsive consort. On appropriate occasion she ordered the guard to oblige the American Minister and Lord Strangford, the British Minister, to dismount. They succeeded in removing the Englishman from his saddle, but Sumter drew a pair of pistols and threatened to shoot if even touched. The guards retreated, but a second and similarly unsuccessful attack was made a little later. Sumter’s attitude was considered gross disrespect by the populace, and Mrs. Sumter was stoned in public. Her assailants went unpunished, and the Princess Regent made a determined effort to obtain official satisfaction from the presumptuous minister through Dom Joao. But there was little of the tyrant in the Prince Regent, and, moreover, he was friendly to Sumter and to the United States. While our bumptious representative absented himself from Court and debated whether he should continue to defend himself or suspend his functions until the receipt of instructions from Washington, Dom Joao issued a decree exempting foreign ministers from the troublesome formality of getting out of their saddles, and only requiring them to remove their hats. In a little while the tempest subsided, and the Princess Regent became so reconciled to the situation as to stop in the course of her drives before the Minister’s home and chat with members of the Sumter family.”

Funny how what we think is our worse, sometimes receives most adulation/admiration. :)

I'm glad you share your process. The downside of Inktober is that it's so intense, there's no feedback, brainstorming, etc.

Thanks! It was an experiment of playing with different values of oxidation. THe background is high iron dark blue, the cat was high iron dark green, on blue.

The bleach technique was messy and hard to control. So I resorted to my gold pen. I later got a white pen, to do more experimentation. :)

Very true. :) Who are we to judge?

25 inferno

The customs and costumes of the Portuguese court did not always transfer comfortably to the Brazilian climate.*

When the king — hyperbolic as ever — griped that the throne room was an ‘inferno’ and that the chamberlain looked ready to faint or, worse, spontaneously combust, Dom Lobo was tempted to suggest João cool himself with a cup of ‘arctic’ coffee, but instead muttered something about samovars and made an excuse to withdraw.

*Historians have likened it to a ‘tropical Versailles’.

26 puzzling

It may seem puzzling that João’s Romantic sensibilities expressed themselves chiefly in heavy overcoats and waistcoats inspired by northern European portraiture — garments wholly unsuited to Rio’s climate — rather than loose linens and flowing skirts in the Byronic manner.

João’s view, however, was that while such airy fashions might do for poets, stargazers, and skinny dippers, a certain kingly decorum had to be maintained in public, whatever the discomfort. Naturally, this tension only deepened his sense of saudade — which, on some level, he rather enjoyed.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
