InkFlash - Franklin Christoph Olde Emerald

InkFlashes are short and quick presentations that show just enough detail to get a feel for the ink. A couple of years ago, @lgsoltek gifted me a bunch of samples to try out. This Olde Emerald was among them. The ink sample was just over 1 ml, so I had to use it as economical as possible. But as you will see, I ran out of my last drop of ink while doing the 1.5mm stub writing sample.

Drying test was with a 1.1 nib in a Lamy Safari, so fairly long drying times are not totally unexpected. This is my first try with the @LizEF technique... I haven't got the hang of it yet, but I will learn...

A look at the chromatography

Only one word for it: Wow!

Writing sample on papers good and bad

Also with the Lamy Safari 1.1 nib. The bleed-through test is done as follows: 1x, 2x and 3x fill of the squares from left to right, to get increasing saturation of the paper. The 1x fill is most akin to normal writing. Beware that on the reverse side, the most saturated square appears on the left.

And finally a quick doodle

Great job, and what a great review.

Looking at yours, I'm wondering if I'm complicating my life with such detailed reviews. :)

From your inkflash, I can extrapolate how the ink behaves. It's well behaved on all paper, unless the pen is gushing. Dry times are longish. (hint: I use M nib for dry times as you used to do. That gives an idea of dry time. )

The chroma is as exquisite as the drawing. 👏

I'm very impressed that you managed to get all that out of only 1mL of ink!!  And here I thought only my reviews could get by on so little ink. :D Well done!

  I do the "single vertical line under the numbers" because I'm sometimes making one mark per second, and I can't write a number that quickly.  Plus, numbers have the nib changing speed and overlapping lines, which can lead to unpredictable smearing...  Not that you have to do it my way - if you haven't watched one of my videos, do - it makes a lot more sense in action than it does on the static paper.  When seeing it in action, you understand why I count down rather than up.  This link should jump you straight to the dry time portion of my Stipula Musk Green review. Anywho, just some thoughts in case you want to replicate.  Also, you technically don't have to write the numbers in the review ink - they could be pre-written or printed.

Very cool!  Makes me wonder what it would look like on a microscope slide... :)

Meanwhile, back to the ink - I like it best from that B nib - lovely shading! :D  This is the sort of color I would enjoy a sample of, but wouldn't want a bottle of. :)

I absolutely adore your doodle.  You've become expert at making interesting backgrounds, and your drawing has precisely enough to make it very pleasing - the color and subject working together.  I'm imagining myself hiking up the hills to town and back out of it - an old town in Austria, maybe. :D

Thanks, @namrehsnoom!  Excellent job, as always, and such a pleasure to see another inkflash so soon.

Love love love the chroma. Of your comparison inks I have the Papier etc. Streetcar.  It's dry and elusive.

Thanks for the inkflash!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Well… full reviews allow one to present more aspects & dimensions of the ink. Which give us a much better impression of strengths & weaknesses. And of areas were the ink excels, both in writing and drawing. So keep doing yours! My own plan is to keep on doing long reviews - I enjoy the time spent with the ink, even if such reviews take a much longer time to develop.

My goal with the inkflashes is to give those inks a chance that would otherwise never make it to a full review. And to be honest: I was really surprised that an inkflash can be done in about 30 minutes. Real quick. But then… it’s just a bunch of pics without any interpretation.

Yup… that’s what I also normally use. Except in this case… there was just no more ink left. Just a tiny bit in the 1.1 that I also needed for the doodle.

I was stupid 🤪, and tried to adapt your tried-and-tested technique by writing numbers in 5 sec intervals. But your totally right: numbers don’t give the same consistency as lines.

Next time, I’ll be a good padawan, and follow the master’s advice

Thanks! It makes sense. The written review takes 30 minutes. The drawing much more. The writing depending the ink 30 minutes. The upload on multiple website, more time.

That's a good way to go. Actually, I used to do quick reviews like you and then I evolved into na cross between yours and @LizEF. ;)

Yep. I get it. I'm with the same conundrum with some 2ml samples. I'm always afraid to run out of ink. 1 ml is heroic. :D

  Not stupid at all.  The technique is counter-intuitive until your conscious mind explains it all to your instinctive mind, and then it's like 💡.
