Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Tintenlabor New Iron Gall Ink 1 Dark Green / Black

This is review #347 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: This is the new formula, with a flow aid added. Please see my spreadsheet to find the old review.

German name: Eisengallustinte 1, dunkelgrün / schwarz

The microscope slide was uninteresting.  Cleaning wasn't quite as bad as the IG2 Dark Blue/Black (previous review).  The ascorbic acid sped things up nicely, so I highly recommend it for iron gall inks.  Otherwise: swab, pipe cleaner, toothbrush, and ultrasonic were all helpful to speed the process.

The ink threatened to stop flowing last night (end of day 7), but never quite did. I really think these iron galls benefit from getting a lot of writing regularly - keep that feed full of "fresh" ink from the cartridge / converter / ink chamber, and the flow will be better.

Erratum: There's an "e" missing. Please enjoy finding where it should have been. :D

Zoomed in photo (Pretty close.)

Scan of Completed Review (This is the closest to what my eyes see.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Both are fairly close, color-wise.)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 300µm. With 347 inks measured, the average line width is 298µm.)

Wow what grew review @LizEF

This is one of my favorite inks. The colour  oxidizes overtime into a lovely green-grey.

Could you explain to me, how you do you water test?  I'm not sure the difference between day 2 and 6?

I see Quin is becoming an activist. ;) it's good to defend what we think it's right.

I didn't catch the errata but I caught another one  :D

Thanks for reviewing these fascinating inks, exploring their quirks, their unique  character and bringing magic to this sleepy summery Tuesday. 🙏🙏🙏

The IG2 is even more green-grey.  I should ship you my bottles. :D

When I ink the pen (Tuesday afternoon/evening), I write the name of the ink and "Day 1 @ HH:MM".  On each day that the ink is in the pen, I write a line, noting which day it was and the time of day when I wrote the line (you can see the full sheet in the video - I include "chapters" so you can jump straight to the water test).  Then, during the review, I write the "written just now" and immediately drip water on each day's line, wiggle it around to spread the water, wait a bit (mentally humming the Final Jeopardy tune while twiddling), then blot up the water.  So, the difference between day 2 and day 6 is 4 days. ;)

 We were both surprised, but it is what he thinks is right.  Just took a bit for him to realize the consequences for others. :)

:lticaptd:What did I miss!?  (If it was a grammar error, we're pretending like it's one of those times when number disagreement is acceptable...)

I like the base color.  But not the lack of lubrication, or the fuss I'd have to commit, if I was using this ink.

But I love the care taken and your sciency approach to ink.  Of course I love the storyline, complete with groans, and the way your saga has grown from its beginnings.

O ho ho, it's magic!  Thanks so much, @LizEF, for the Tuesday Treat.  👏🏻 💝 😊

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

No thanks my 2nd  infinity drawer is flowing with ink.

I remember now. 💡I got confused when I see day 1, day 7.  So basically, the older the writing sample, the better the water resistance. :☺️

Makhabesh's cynisme and Essri's gentle as has had its effect.

😸😎 2nd paragraph.  First line: last sentence: I believe it should read lights.

And same paragraph, 2nd line. I let you find that one. ;) Frankly I don't care about typos. I know it's a big deal for some. But it's not a rocket formula. :lticaptd:

I don't even particularly like the color.  The dried, more foresty color is better for me, but this just doesn't fit into any of my green preferences...  And apparently I'll have to find something else to do with it as @yazeh has declined to add another infinity drawer. :P

Ironically, that *is* a shade of green that I DO rather like -- especially after it oxidizes.  So this one might be a maybe for me (although it doesn't seem to be as water resistant as I might have expected).

Thanks as usual for the comprehensive review (one of these days I need to get back into reading the "story" part -- I am SOOOO far behind in the plot at this point... :wallbash:).

:)  As I understand it, it's not fully water resistant until it has fully oxidized.  So the dye is coming up.  Maybe wait for next week - you might like that green even better (or not)... FWIW.

You're very welcome!  Remember, you can follow the link to my website and read it in print much faster and easier than backtracking through reviews - depending on how far behind you are, you may only need to read part 7, maybe 6 and 7... ;)

Thanks! :)  I appreciate the subscription and letting me know.  Hope you're enjoying Seiboku - it's one of my favorites!  (For any readers: Be sure to shake it before filling, as with all pigmented inks!  But don't shake up iron galls!)

There you go!  @inkstainedruth - PM me if you want some IG greens!

Thanks -- but I have too many untried samples and bottles of ink already.... Including a bunch of black inks that I was going to use for a testing project that never got past the first round: what inks did well for inking over pencil drawings on crummy paper that were relatively lightfast and water-resistant and stood up to the pencil part being erased... especially in super-humid late summer in Western PA?

Yeah, that was for the *other* hobby.  But never got past the first round.  And I was using some freebie Platinum Preppy pens set up with the roller ball head which had come with some Noodler's inks (this was back before Noodler's started including the Charlie eyedropper pens instead).

I saw the YouTube movie first, only now reading the book. Agree with Sailor Kenshin.

:) You're welcome.  (The waiting wasn't hard - I always publish reviews a month after I make them.  But I confess I'm glad I don't have to remember on the day before publishing to do a new scan of the review sheet. :D )

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺
    • Mercian
Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
