To my eye, this ink looks like a slightly more-'purple' (or less-'red') R&K Scabiosa

Check te photo stream, you'll see a side by side photo of Scabiosa and Purple Black 1 not the same colour.

I can't really say, I haven't used Scabiosa in a long time.

It is my understanding that this process is dependent on the type of paper, wetness, nib size, etc. For eEx an Ef nib is dark purple vs a fude or stub nib is paler.  I'll post my review hopefully this weekend, but the photos are already uploaded.

I share your bewilderment.  One half of our garage has space for my car.  But my better half apparently prefers scraping ice and snow off his car all winter to clearing the "stuff" from the other half of the garage. 

 

And thanks for the review--that's a beautiful colour!  I don't want an iron gall ink, and I'm still almost tempted to get a sample.

This looks like a really nice colour, and with the IG component useful as an at-work ink. A bit confusing that there are two versions of the ink - which both look nice. I think the paler number 1 is a nice choice for journaling, and that the darker number 2 would work great in a pocket pen at work.

The difference is in the iron content, price, and tone.   Purple 1 has 3 gr/l iron content, high dye, Purple 2 has 4 gr/l iron, low dye. 

Because this is a unique stabilizing dye, the oxidation process is slow; possibly, both inks have a longer shelf life. 

As Purple 1 has a high dye content, the price is higher.

Hope it explains it all.

As @yazeh said - the different series are for different concentrations of iron.  Next Tuesday will be the final in this series, and then after about a month I'll be posting some from the new formulation that flow better, including some I haven't reviewed before.
