Wire bound vs. hard bound notebooks

No I don't use my notebooks as a seat cushion. The binding isn't even mangled when the back cover falls off. It's like the last loop should have been longer and used to loop around the back covers

Thanks Bookman. I might look into these "Miquelrius" notebooks. I don't know how to say that word.

I might also try one of these disc binding systems, and then using whatever paper I want.

Luke 13:1-9 saved my life.

Good luck.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

I've used spiral bound most of my life but since I've been using fountain pens last few years I've become increasingly annoyed with the spiral wire as I get to the right hand side of the page. It screws up my rhythm and it's screws up my handwriting. So while I used to never consider any alternative except spiral now I just cannot write with it at all. I blame FPN for this of course.

That wire can really irritate me when my hand bumps into it. I keep forgetting I don't need to write on the verso if I'm filling the notebook: I can write on the recto through the last page, flip the notebook over, and keep writing on the recto. In any case, the good of the wirebound notebook outweighs the bad for me. The ability to turn the two sides back on themselves completely gives me more freedom in larger notebooks to write anywhere without a table, desk, counter, etc., underneath. That can also be done with a hardcover with a sewn binding, even a large one. But then I'm wrestling with a 17x11 or double-A4 on my lap with a hinge in the middle that turns the nonwriting side into a dead body. And I have to sit down for that if it's a large hardcover, B5 and above. And I need space on both sides for that dead body to flop into when I'm not writing on it. I can write in an 8½x11 wirebound notebook standing up and without a writing surface if I need to or want to. I would rather my hand bump up against the wire.

Regarding the spiral bound notebooks, I started using a trick that was mentioned on FPN.

I am right handed, I only wight on the right side page.

When I get to the end of the notebook, I flip it over and write back to front on the other page, which is now on the right side.

The return pass, back to front, I am writing upside down on the page, but it does not matter, I quickly adapted.

In this way, my hand is not dealing with the spiral wire under my hand when I write.

For you lefties, do the opposite, write on the left page, flip it over and continue back to front.

I don't have a problem bumping in to the wire bonding when I'm writing on the left-hand page, but Bookman and ac12 both have really good ideas for dealing with it, if it bothers you.
