Kitty Inkpot - Lost Rose

Review #181

According to Soe& Soe:

https://soeandsoe.com.au/products/lost-rose

Lost Rose is a chormoshading purple ink with reddish pink shading and cooler purple shading, made by an Independent Ink studio in China.

Part of Kitty Inkpot Season III collection Odyssey of Unknown Island.

A life time ago, I read a passionate book,  In Search of Lost Roses, by Thomas Christoper about a "stubborn band of eccentric characters who rescued old roses from back alleys, ramshackle cottages, and overgrown graveyards across the country."  As someone who loves antique/historical roses, and felines, the combination of the brand and the name was irresistible.  🙀

Of the three "chromoshading" inks, I reviewed, I liked this one most, but not at the beginning, as ink had little to no lubrication, had no water resistance, plus I didn’t see much of a chromoshading in writing.

So, I forgot the pens and got busy with new inks :D

As I was preparing this review, I was pleasantly surprised, that in the Lamy Safari, how colour became darker, richer, and the ink flow and lubrication acceptable. However, the Sheaffer Targa refused to budge, even after priming. Only after a lot of coaxing with a water brush it decided to write.

So, If you like the colour, you need a nice, wet, well sealed pen, a soft buttery nib and patience (that is fill your pen and leave it alone for some time), get a sample and treat yourself.

As for the chromoshading, if you like drawing or do ink art, when applied heavily, the colour really shines and gives a third dimension to your art work. (Check the 3rd drawing below).

Cleaning was ok with Safari, but with the Targa it was difficult. The orange/sepia dye was stubborn.

Comparison:

I have nothing like this colour. It's like a pale lavender. The scanner however, has captured the chroma shading effet.

Art Work:

Here is a series of thematic art work, going overboard with a little story, in italics.

In search of the Lost Rose

It was early June. A sudden gust filled the room with the fragrance of  longing and loss. Cat & mouse had to find why their hearts were filled with so much joy and sorrow.

Off the went on a journey and smelled the first rose. but mouse knew right away. A rose so uptight cannot be so generous...

Rose after rose, they closed their eyes, and opened their hearts, to the scent of deep yearning and lost love...

They came upon, the one, but she blushed and whispered, "Alas, it is not me,"

They looked above and saw the evening sky shimmering with the purple haze.

"Close your eyes" and see with your heart, whispered the rose.

Tintenlabor Dark Green 2 (the dark spots in the rose are also done with this ink) - Note the chromoshading with multiple application.

They closed their eyes and were transported to a lonely planet, where a baobab tree, protected a rose from a curious creature.

"What are you? Why are you wearing my Prince's scarf"  the rose cried, brandishing her thorns.

" I am the one, he tamed," the fox replied wistfully.

"He is not coming back, is he?" The rose turned purple in grief and spread her fragrance into the space, so that stars and planets know about her loss and remember.

Cat & mouse realized "that what is essential is invisible to the eye." But by the time they reached home, their minds had forgotten but not their hearts :)

·      Pens used: Pilot Kakuno Ef, Lamy (EF/F/M/B/ Stub 1.1), Sheaffer Targe semi-flex

·      What I liked: Colour. Doing multilayered washes.

·      What I did not like: Lack of lubrication, writing experience in the beginning and availability.

·       What some might not like: Lack of lubrication.

·       Writing experience: Borderline unpleasant, but with time it gets better.

·       Pros: Fast dry times, nice for artsy work.

·       Cons: Low lubrication. Needs a soft wide nib.

·      Shading: Depends on pen/ paper combo.

·      Ghosting: Faint.

·      Bleed through: A few bits here and there.

·      Flow Rate: Below average.

·      Lubrication: Below average but gets better over time.

·      Nib Dry-out: Did not notice.

·      Start-up:  WIth Safari ok, with Targa, after a few weeks of not writing, it went on strike.

·      Saturation:  Not saturated. Dusky rose.

·      Shading Potential: Depends on pen.

·      Sheen: No.

·      Spread / Feathering / Woolly Line: Did not notice.

·      Nib Creep / “Crud”: Did not notice.

·      Staining (pen): No.

·      Clogging: Did not notice.

·      Cleaning: Depends on the pen. The orange/sepia dye was tenacious in the Targa only.

·      Water resistance: None.

·      Availability:  35 ml bottles

Please don't hesitate to share your experience, writing samples or any other comments. The more the merrier  :)

My other hobby.

I find it intriguing that almost everywhere pioneers went they took their fruit trees, vegetable seeds, and... roses. And in long abandoned places here I have found remains of homes, just a chimney and door step and an old rose bush somewhere nearby.

Will work for pens...

At one point on the Antique Rose forums, we were looking for a lost rose, named Francis Dubreuil, all the way to Australia. But the trail dried up. The one that is commercialized in US and I believe in Europe isn't the right one. I guess, for pioneers, roses, was their link to their homeland, like poppies, for fallen soldiers 🥲

Francis Dubreuil

I grew that, or a rose of that name, about 25 years ago but lost it in transplanting to where I still live. A dark red, lowish growing tea rose. Hmmm... I just looked in Tea Roses : Old Roses for Warm Gardens (written by a group of local ladies) and see it says "The rose in commerce in Australia today as the Tea Francis Dubriel, Dubriel, France 1894 is not the original rose.

HMF separated the Francis Dubreuil pages:

https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php?searchNmTyp=5&searchNm=Francis+Dubreuil&rid=2260&sbSearch=SEARCH&tab=1

So you have the historical lost one, which I remember translating the original advertisement and then you have the in commerce one, the Australian and the European / American ones. Fascinating story :) Our climates are so different, but we grow the same flower and love inks :)

@yazeh, then this rose-named ink was made for you!

An amazing chroma, a fascinating ink, but… no, not for me.

But the story and drawing are  wonderful.

Thanks for saving me from this particular rose!  And for your lovely ink-splorations.  Can't wait to see what's next.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Always happy to help, even if a rose is a rose, is a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet ☺️

I could get on board with a dusky purple, but like nearly every one of its peers, it seems this one will make my pen scratchy.  I don't like scratchy. :(

The chroma is kinda cool, and that sepia-orangish dot at the bottom is surprising!

I kinda like the color in the photos (not so much in the scans), so I'm glad they're more accurate.  Gorgeous shading. :)

Fun swatches! :D  Sweet water-test sketch.

Absolutely adore the cat & mouse meet The Little Prince story! :D  Very cool chroma shading on that giant rose!  Love the drawing of the Prince's planet.  Such a sad ending to a fun story.

Thanks, @yazeh, for this top-notch review and for making the most out of an ink my fine nibs wouldn't know what to do with. :)

Yes it is. But such is life and what it makes this story unforgettable. 🥲

Indeed.  I still prefer for most of my fiction to have happy endings, though. ;)

@yazeh It's certainly an interesting color.  I think in the long run, though, that it's too pale an ink for my taste.

But thanks as always for the comprehensive review and fun artwork.

Actually, the line you added was what the ending I wanted. Thank you. I upgraded it.  As for happy ending, in my opinion human resilience in face of adversity is happy ending. Only if we knew that as our inner power, then life would be easier 🙏

Yes!  Much as we may not like it, nothing exists without its opposite - not even happy.

Thank you, @yazeh, for this ink review, for the beautiful drawings and for the story lines bound in between.  Excellent, what a heartwarming pleasure!

Me too, I would not like the colour as it appears from the scans, but intensity and chroma looks charming from the photos.

To my surprise (hmm, 🤫, maybe not so surprising), I added some blue and purple to P.E. Rose Quartz until it looked like Lost Rose from your photos and used it already last year. it will have a re-appearance in May ... ;) :)

Looking forward to your next review!

A new series of IG inks?  Oooooooh!  I can't wait!  I've really liked a lot of the IG inks I've tried, even though they are a little high maintenance (especially when flushing them out of a pen).

Yep, they are. But, I've found ways to make it less painful :)

I hope you share them in your reviews - I've had to resort to cotton buds, a toothbrush, and a pipe cleaner - even the ultrasonic (with plain water) had no effect.
