Unusual Feed on an Esterbrook J

I came across an unusual (at least for me) 2048 nib with a flatter feed instead of the usual fins. I'm not sure of materials, but it could be an ebonite feed? It causes a J pen to leak around the bottom of the feed, whereas the usual feeds don't leak. So, can anyone explain about this strange feed?

I have quite a few 2XXX and a 3XXX nib with similar-looking feeds. The Venus and Linton nibs also have that style of feed.

That’s an earlier nib unit, which would have been standard for later two hole

clip dollar pens and some transitional models before 1947. There are several variations of flat or semi-flat feeds for renew points.

Thanks for the replies. I like to understand what I like, so these comments help greatly. Mr. Anderson, when I work on pens, my go-to supplies came from Anderson Pens. I miss your contributions to our passion and hope whatever private investment vulture capitalists who represent the Palmer House get their comeuppance.

I must admit, Lisa and I both laughed at “vulture capitalists”. Thank you. We hope to be back in the community in some capacity in the near future. We’ll be in Chicago and St. Louis shows for sure.
