Two New Lamy Inks Coming March 13th

Pen Ffynnon

Recommended Posts

I have not seen them, nor seen writing samples of them, but got an email from Goldspot talking about them. Lamy will be releasing Petrol and Sepia. Quoting Goldspot: "In 2025, it seems like Lamy learned its lesson**, stating clearly that tne new Petrol ink will be different than the original from 2017..."

** referring to the Dark Lilac thing.

Apologies for not doing more googling for sample views, but I'm at work, at lunch, and almost out of time. 🫠

Heaven forbid they just give it a new name and avoid confusion altogether.  It's not like there's a shortage of available color-related words.

I see that both inks have appeared under "Coming Soon" at Goulet Pens:

https://www.gouletpens.com/products/lamy-sepia-50ml-bottled-ink

https://www.gouletpens.com/products/lamy-petrol-50ml-bottled-ink

The photos give an idea of what both inks look like. Petrol looks a little greener and brighter than OG Petrol to my eyes on my screen, but I don't think we can conclude much from a few photos. I like the look of both colors and it's nice to see Lamy branching out some more in their standard line.

We can't afford a reoccurrence of such an earth-shattering scandal in these troubled times. World peace and the status quo are at stake enough as it is.

Jet Pens I know had Violet Blackberry, but it looks like they're currently sold out.  Dunno when it was released--I'm not a huge purchaser of their inks. They have Pink Cliff in stock and I think (heavy on the "think") that one's been out since last year.

Oh, (bleep), yes. There's me not thinking. I'm sorry @AmandaW! I'm a bonehead.

The Violet Blackberry and Cliff pens were available here, but not the inks. I refused to buy a pen in protest.

If the same thing is happening with these new releases I will be a little sad cos I do like sepia... whatever. There are plenty of other brands.

Will work for pens...

Somebody over on the fountain pens subreddit has posted pictures of both. Sepia is, to my eyes, just another kind of boring reddish-brown with an odd greyish-greenish(?) sheen. Petrol looks like a dark teal. Personally, not eager to pick up either. Ymmv.

Hmmm.  The Sepia looks interesting.  I'd have to see the "Petrol" in person.

My take is different from Ruth's. The Sepia don't shade...and is more than a bit too red for my taste, and the Petrol does shade. I would have to look hard at it, in I do have 22 green-greenish inks.

I did end up with the new Dark Lilac. When if first came out as a LE, I went into down town Heidelberg where there is a Lamy only shop, and in May they didn't have anymore.

I saw a swatch card swab for the "reissued" Dark Lilac ink at a pen show and wasn't overly enamored by the sheen on it.  But the original formula?  I had gone to the Triangle Pen Show that year, in the hope that someone might have it, and talked to one vendor who was local-ish and HE said that he didn't even KNOW when he was getting his order of it in, and didn't know what the issue was (he said the Dark Lilac Safaris were FLYING off the shelves).  And Anderson Pens was also there, but their shipment hadn't arrived before they had to drive to Raleigh from where they were.  So I went back to my hotel room one night and looked at their website and it had JUST come in and I ordered it on the spot (and am now kicking myself that I DIDN'T order a second bottle when I had the chance... :wallbash:).

Astonishingly, these two 'new' inks ARE now listed for sale here in the UK (unlike 2016's 'Dark Lilac', 2017's 'Petrol', and the recent 'Pink Cliff' and 'Violet Blackberry')!
So, I hope (&🤞 for you) that they will also be available Down Under.

I'm wondering if the old ink recipes aren't available because of supply issues (dyes and other items not available) or was it a safety issue? Ir perhaps it's got something to do with cost.

I like the Petrol color and would consider buying this new one if my bottle of Robert Oster Velvet Storm runs low. I think it does the petrol thing pretty well.

I'm curious about the "new" Petrol ink.  I may get a sample of it at some point to see how it compares to MB Leo Tolstoy color-wise.  I may think about gettin a sample of the Sepia as well (of course I already have way too many inks in general).

Some 15 miles/20km away, from where I live is the Lamy Factory.

In the far right hand corner of the Lamy factory is an eyeballed huge 5-7m diameter by 10m tall tank, with internal wire braced tubes sticking out of it. There were piles of heavy paper bags...dyes around the foot of it...2 or so meters high in places, and 3-4 meters surrounding the metal? tank.

One of the plastic tubes ran some 50 or 60 meters, feeding the cartridge line.

On the newspaper tour, we were not allowed over there.

.......................

Lamy has always been odd with its inks. It's very nice Violet only comes in cartridges. And it took them decades to improve the green.

That must've been quite a sight! It blows my mind thinking about the scale of industries today!
