Namiki Emperor Nib Comparison

Ali Hobbies

Recommended Posts

I am fairly new to the hobby compared to most of you. Over the last year I have really come to enjoy writing and the hobby overall.

I love a lot of pens but my favorite is the Namiki Emperor. I get a lot of joy writing with it. When I was researching which one to get, I was curious to get a comparison of the various nibs. Earlier today I put together my own comparison of the Medium Fine, Medium, and Broad nibs. Attaching the photo here in case it is useful.

Apologies for my poor script. It is one of my New Year’s resolutions to improve it.

Thanks for this, @Ali Hobbies!   When my ship comes in, I think I'll go for the Medium nib. :-)

Currently most used pen: Parker 51 Aerometric <F> -- filled with Waterman Mysterious Blue ink.

Thank you for sharing the comparison 👍  I think Namiki Emperor is one such pen which many of us hope to get some day.

Thanks! It sure is fun to write with.

When I bought my vermilion No. 50, the medium-fine nib was not available, so I settled for a medium. Unless I'm mistaken, there seems to be no way to get the nib exchanged. Thanks for this posting that confirms that I'd be happier with the medium-fine.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

It would be fairly easy to get the Medium ground a bit finer if that is what you want.  That may be simpler and even less expensive than trying to get a nib exchange.

I’m glad it was useful @jmccarty3 . I am not sure if it would be possible to swap the nibs but, as @whichwatch suggests, grinding is an option. I have a friend who had his medium #50 ground to an extra fine and he is very pleased with it.

May I ask, what is your preferred ink with the Emperor?

My favorite ink for this pen is Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuyu-kusa. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued, but I have a couple of spare bottles.

Thank you. I do love Iroshizuku. My favorite is Asa Gao.

Thank you very much for this post.

I just would like to know whether the fine nib is scratchy or not. I don't want to buy a pen with a so wide nib as the Sailor KOP's M.

Thanks in advance!

You are most welcome.

Finest one I have is the medium-fine and, in my experience, it is not scratchy at all. I don’t have the fine.

I hope this helps.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
