Montblanc 149 filler knob and the helix spindle

If you break a helix spindle in the MB 149 filler knob for whatever reason

you enter a world of hurt!

Helix spindles from/installed by  Montblanc look fairly low tech and flimsy.

You can get better ones from Custom Pen Parts in the UK. Roger's got a website.

The challenge is removing the broken one and replacing it with a new/better one.

Tools are available but even with the tools and instruction the job is far from simple.

I never knew before that the helix spindle is fitted into the filler knob one of two ways.

One way is using a brass bush and the other way is by using a small circlip.

Visual inspection is required to find out which version you're dealing with.

You have to shine a light down there and even then visibility can be difficult.

I'm told that removing the brass bush is the most difficult challenge while removing

and refitting the small circlip version is  supposed to be easier.

Has any FPN member ever had to deal with this situation?

I really want to learn from someone who's succeeded at this challenge.

I can maintain my MB 149 collection but this one aspect of MB repair is a

skill worth learning. Forget about asking MB to do it.

I want to do it.
