Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Sheaffer Skrip Purple

This is review #316 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Added a couple drops of water to top off the cartridge. This is a nice purple color that shifts from red-lean when wet to blue-lean when dry. It also goes sort of pastel-ish when it dries - while wet, it's more vibrant.

Cleaning was quick and easy.

The ink is too blue in the video, by far. Also, I forgot to set the camera to over-expose the video - sorry - will continue to work on making that a habit.  (I've added a sticky note to the camera mount to remind myself.)

Zoomed in photo (On one monitor, it's a little too chalky and blue; on the other, it's too red. :/)

Screenshot (A little too blue on one monitor, very close on the other.)

Scan of Completed Review (A little too blue on one monitor, almost perfect on the other.)
large.SheafferSkripPurpleS.jpg.8ffad184eec0e0eb2b73f3883adb60e3.jpg

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (Colors are pretty close. CP is a little too blue.)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 306µm. With 316 inks measured, the average line width is 297µm.) (Shows a bit of sheen, but I never saw it in the writing.)

Microscope image (400x (both images). The ink made little dumbbells and feathery branches. The inset is closer to the actual color, the background image is too dark and too blue.)

Great! I love purples in general. Above all, for mixes, this one comes in nicely every time. I learnt that from Richard about 100 years ago. Well, okay, 17 years ago. Possibly (who cares?) this may be the one ink I've used up and re-bought more than any other.

Pretty color!  Especially in the exotic flower and floating tree-covered island. You know I'm not a poiple ink lover but I might still have a lone Sheaffer Purple cart.

Do you happen to know whether your cart was new or old stock?

Yeah, I'm with Quin here (seeks hiding place/blankets, and no Friday the 13ths). Some of this reminds me of LOTR.

Thanks, @LizEF,, for making Tuesdays magical and fun... I always look forward to your review and story!

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

:)  I wish my photos could have done it justice - it just did not want to be photographed!  Also, I hope they haven't changed the ink on you, like they did Sheaffer Green (dramatic color change).

:) Yes, quite nice, and who knows, your cartridge might have the same ink as mine did! :D (It's frustrating knowing the new owners have changed at least one ink's color, and therefore not having a clue whether your reviews are in any way representative of the current ink...)

My cartridge was purchased in a multi-color blister pack from Anderson Pens in December 2021.  That's all I know. I didn't think to note any of the info on the blister pack, so I couldn't say where it was made, lot number, or anything else.  I do think it was one of those with the black cardboard, not the white and blue ones.  (But I'm not 100% sure of that.)

:D You're not alone.  Blankies are comfy and safe.  Hmm.  Any similarities with LOTR are entirely subconscious.  But now maybe I'll have them run into an Orc, just for fun?  (Nah, probably not.)

Great review as usual @LizEF 👍

I enjoyed the storyline and the classic theme of a reluctant hero. It seemed the ink decided to create Quin's laurels with the microscopic images. 😊

I'm wondering  if Smoke slunk in and messed up your lighting :lticaptd:

Thanks for making this Tuesday magical with Quin's magical/ human arc 🙏🙏🙏

Thanks!  Given how brutal we tend to be to our heroes, it's no wonder they're often reluctant. ;)

For a story to work, the hero must be confronted to the worse tragedy and loss..think of Job.... maybe it's the only way, we/our heroes can confront our demons ;)

Yes, our characters experience it so we can figure out how to deal with our own "adventures".

I remember in the beginning, ;)   I had difficulty "torturing" my characters. I didn't want them suffer. But it seems that for our entertainment, attention, characters have to suffer :D

Storytelling (whether written or performed) is rather unique among the arts in this regard.  Visual arts (painting, sculpture, etc.), music, poetry, and even dance can be entirely about beauty.  But storytelling requires conflict.  Where there is no price (no pain or suffering of some sort), there is no conflict.  Without conflict, no one wants to read a story - it's dull.  (Of course, the conflict can be low-risk, as is often the case with comedy, but there still has to be conflict.)

Good point. Though, I'd argue that music is all about tension and release, dissonance, dissolving into harmony. Our ears are nowadays so used to dissonance we don't even hear them.. In the medieval ages they were so afraid of the the devil's interval. Then Bernstein came along and used it for Maria!

Some comedies are based on embarrassment. We laugh out of embarrassment and not out of joy ;) Essri is pure joy, Makhabesh is more cynical laughter :D That's why writing drama is easy and comedy so difficult. :)

Hmm.  Well, I'd still argue that music can be entirely beautiful.  Even if there's the musical equivalent of conflict, it's not the same as story-conflict, IMO.

Yes, and I hate that kind of comedy.  It's all too common these days for there to be a character whose sole purpose is to be mocked, humiliated, and/or embarrassed on a routine basis.  Don't like that at all.  We can do better.

:D  Yes, Makhabesh is a bit snarky.

Yes, comedy is much harder, I think.  I was watching an interview with a comedian and a writer of comedies, and it was really interesting to hear them talk about the technique involved, and the interviewer talk about how we actually laugh before we consciously recognize the humor - fascinating stuff. :)   Drama, on the other hand, is all too familiar - we all know how it works.

Sure, it's a different medium. :)

The oracle says: "This is a purple ink made for greatness. Its road from cartridge to paper is made with microscopic feathers and fluffy things!"

Oh yes!, this one looks great, independent from becoming more chalky during drying.

Thank you @LizEF for this ink review, for the story part and for these nice microscopy arrangements! :)  :)

My wallet says: "I see greatness on our road forward! No money to spend for cartridges and already more purple inks in the collection than can be used in a lifetime. We will become rich, maybe."

May I ask why you use the word "only" to begin the sentence. Have you checked your camera? 😳 .... :)

Looking forward to next week .... realize it is December 24th .... is there a Xmas Special to expect? ;) :)

No worry!

A Merry Christmas to you @LizEF and to all the other members of FPN!

One life!

:D Purple > Royalty > Rich - it's perfectly logical for your wallet to think these things.

 It gets checked every Tuesday...  But as long as we're talking about Smoke - apparently I didn't pack one of the kitty presents well enough and so the bells included rattle.  Smoke has decided that the box itself is one big jingle bell present and keeps knocking the box around as if it were the present...  I have to keep moving it back under the tree...:sm_cat::lol:

:) No Christmas special in the story, nor planned as part of the review - I get in "assembly line" mode and don't think about what day the video will go live until I upload it to YouTube and schedule when it goes public...  By then it's too late to add something (to the video, at least)...

Hi Liz, thanks for the story and review, it’s a joy to read the chapters on your episodes every week. Did your ink pastelify on all papers, or just the Rhodia? Have you tried it on Iroful?

I found a picture of my daily engagement calendar/chore list from last year while using a Sheaffer Purple cartridge from a black multipack. The paper is pretty thick and glossy, and several inks sheen on it that may not often sheen on other papers. It’s what made me look for a bottle. In person it’s a metallic sheen that leans towards old gold/bronze. You can see it a bit in the picture.

Alas, it fell between letter writing sessions, so I didn't try it on Iroful.  It pastelified on both Rhodia and Tomoe River and a little less so on the Clairefontaine 90gsm "Ivory" paper found in Rhodiarama notebooks.

Nice!  I didn't see anything like that - but it could also be that the review pen doesn't put down enough ink.  The ink looks quite a bit darker in your image, too.

Very frustrating for the relationship between my cartridge and whatever they currently make to be entirely unknown. :)  Maybe if they ever start selling through retailers who offer samples, I'll buy some samples - in a few years... ;)

Thanks as usual for the comprehensive review.  I keep forgetting that I think I HAVE a bottle of this ink....  And should now pull it back out and put it in something....

Hmmm.  Haven't used the Sheaffer Star Wars R2D2 pen for a while.....  Or, for that matter, the Yoda pen or the BB-8 pen....  I think that ink would look good coming out of ANY of those....
