Orange Ink Choice?

Hmm the more I learn the less I know :)

Well as part of a Christmas present to myself, before seeing the latest posts in this thread, I ordered a bottle of the Diamine Pumpkin.  I hope it will be OK.

I'll restrict it to one of my TWSBI pens as they seal well when capped (don't dry out easily) and can be disassembled for cleaning if necessary.

It's a nice bright orange.  Hope you enjoy it!

Unsure if it will work in an EF nib but I'll give it a go.

I reviewed it in a Japanese EF.  Worked fine.

There were two MB orange inks...I don't remember if mine was Joy or not.

It's got a nice looking bottle........nothing special ink.

Don't know how to make it more lively........the more I think of it, the prettier the bottle is....empty.

I'm curious, did you encounter inks that didn't work well with EF nibs?

I've been trying to remember, but I don't think I ever had that problem 🤔

Some were not very pleasant (unlubricated), or very pale, but I don't think I ever had some that didn't work at all.

I chase two toned shading ink and don't expect much to any shading in EF.

(Modern Pelikan double ball EF is more towards F than the semi-vintage and vintage Pelikan EF's. I find Modern double ball Pelikans to be 1/2 a width wider than the old nibs.)....I have an old small W.Germany tear drop nibbed 600 OBB that is have a width narrower than a modern double ball 800 OBB.

I tend to stay away from modern post '97 Pelikans outside of the 200 LE's...which went over to the fat and blobby double ball nibs some 5-6 years ago.:crybaby: Ruining a grand nib.............I do suggest getting an old used tear drop tipped  200 for a nice springy nib, that writes with a clean line.

I use to rave about that nib, rightfully. Now I buy them only in EF.....but have other nibs that I can swap in from other pens.....if I remember.

With F in any but old Waterman and Japanese, I expect two toned shading.

My '90 Waterman Mann 200's F nib is as narrow as a modern 200's EF.

Some 15 years ago there use to be flame wars between 'my ever so much narrower' Waterman nib users and Pelikan swap nib users. (not IMO, were there not all that many who had lots of nibs to swap as Pelikan users, more having pens they could swap nibs around in, rather than having spare nibs.....at least by me.(( now have lots and lots of pens to swap nibs with and no spare nibs at all........I did have my pre-400n stubbed semi-flex B in my 605 for ages, before having that fat and blobby double ball nib stubbed from BB to B/1.0.))) In it is a semi-nail, butter smooth is a must.

Then 15 years ago, Japanese nibs stopped being nitch, and Waterman users no longer bragged about how narrow thier nibs had been. They had became a fat Western nib.

I don't have any Japanese pens...once had a Japanese made Shaffer, but expected a narrow nib. I got rid of it because it was a nail.

I have enough trouble chasing mostly German pens....living there, and came back to fountain pens going wide...........where there is oddly no my nib is half a hair wider than yours brags.

I do think one is condemed to using boring, vivid, mono-tone ink in EF.

..........at the price of €30/35 a bottle for Japanese ink.....there are some that shade....but don't know if they do that in Japanese F/EF. Kon Piki shades some in my fat western F's.

I was actually more concerned about whether the ink would be saturated enough to be comfortably readable with the finer line and the good news is - yes, it's excellent.

  • 4 weeks later...

I never got on with Diamine Pumpkin... when it first came out there were some weird issues with it cristalising on the nib of capped pens.

I like Yu-Yake, recently rediscovered some notes I used it on in 2011 and it stands out with high legibility. Sailor F nib was my preference.

My personal favorite is Montblanc Ink of Joy... but I dont have much left. I'll use it without regard for preservation, but I dont use orange much.

Montblanc's Lucky Luke ain't bad. If you don't already have it, it'll be hard to find and unlucky to pay for.

A lady from the old folk gymnastics, who I got her two of her fountain pens repaired by Francis, gave her a batch of paper and some ink samples, is going to give me a sample of Edelstein Mandarin.

I wasn't into orange ink back when it came out....still am not really.

I don't like that MB Orange...don't know which it is, in I tossed the box.

I found it rather vapid. There are, it appears, two MB Orange inks.

Back in W. German time, Pelikan made many more inks than now, and I did find it's orange at least as good, perhaps a bit better than the MB ink. I'm not sure if I used the last cartridge I had in my Orange ink test, or 4-5 oranges....some months back. I do know it impressed me more 15 years ago than now.

I've been saying for some 15 years...once a month perhaps, I really got to try Herbin's Indian Orange.

My best liked Orange ink is Apache Sunset.

I've been eyeing Mandarin on Amazon (only 14 left!) but haven't pulled the plug yet. It's certainly a bright, happy color and should be a good performer. I would certainly take it over Yu-yaki. If you're looking for a darker orange like Pumpkin, though, you might consider Fuyu-gaki. I got a free sample a while back and went through it tout de suite. Since I don't really use orange a lot, a couple years passed before I finally ordered a bottle.

I, too, have been looking for a nice orange for an orange Optima. I should have gotten an F but ended up with an EF. I'd like something like Mandarin to more closely match the pen, which is truly eye-searingly bright, but am afraid something bright like Mandarin (or Kin Moseku or Soleil) will stand out enough on the page with a really fine line where I'm sure something like Fuyu-gaki would. I haven't tried anything yet since Optimas, for as beautiful as they are, are kind of a pain to flush.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.
