Fountain Pen Store in Edinburgh?

GNL

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I’m planning a visit to Edinburgh and wondered if there are any first-rate fountain pen shops there.  Suggestions?

Thanks!

GNL

Current favorite pen: Montblanc 144 Meisterstuck purchased at Art Brown in 1984. After decades, every part has been replaced except the nib. Still a gorgeous writing instrument, rock-solid reliable, gives me hours of pleasure to use.

Current favorite ink: Colorverse Supernovs

Current favorite paper: Romeo notepads

Neither first nor any other rated pen shops.

However plenty of other things to do including walking the Royal Mile. Walk along George Street instead of the packed Princes Street which runs parallel to Princes Street and take some time to enjoy the architecture.

Thanks for the tip about George Street.  I’ll definitely check it out.

Before Edinburgh, I’ll be in London, which has plenty of good fountain pen stores, so if I want to buy a pen to remember my trip, I’ll do it there.  I did that in Amsterdam for my last vacation, buying a Montblanc Origin 146 from Akkerman - an excellent fountain pen store.

There is an authorized MontBlanc retailer on Princes Street, FYI. Also, look for charity shops and antique or vintage shops, you can find second hand pens sometimes.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 31 currently inked pens:

Parker Duofold Centennial IM, RO Rose Gold Antiqua

MontBlanc Bohème Noir F, MB Midnight Blue

Platinum PS-5000(?) EF, Platinum Mixable Aqua

MontBlanc for BMW IM, MB Green with SC-15

Parker True Blue Ringtop F, Quink Blue-Black

Edinburgh has a lot to offer but pen hunting is not one of them, I have been there many times and high property prices and rents restrict what is available.

There is a good open top double decker tourist bus service to see the city

One of my favourite restaurants is on a street called George IV Bridge, an elevated road and not a bridge, called The Outsider, you will need to book for dinner,  there is also a good stationery shop on Raeburn Place but this not not so central

Thanks very much for all these recommendations.  I’m working on my list of places to go, things to see and where to eat this afternoon, as it happens, so this is very useful info.  Much appreciated!

You should definitely swing by “The Writing Desk” on North Castle Street. I found some awesome fountain pens there when I visited. Also, “Fountain Pens of Edinburgh” on George Street is worth a stop if you have time. Both places have great selections and friendly staff.

These two names are new to me, do you have any links, I have done a Google search without success.

Hmm.  The Writing Desk had a shop in Bury St Edmonds, England, but now only online

Just searched and there's no Fountain Pens of Edinburgh to be found.  Much like the rest of the UK, Edinburgh's a fountain pen shop desert

Well, for starters, in my favorite neighborhood - Seven Dials - there’s this one.  Mostly Japanese pens, but certainly a decent selection.

Hi

Seven Dials is in London, Choosingkeeping is also in London.

We are looking at pen stores in Edinburgh, Scotland, 400+ miles from London.

There is a few more in London but they tend to be in Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnums etc

If you check back in the string, you’ll see someone questioned whether there were actually pen shops in London.  I was replying to that.

Purchased a notebook there.  Other than Ohnishi all the other pens are common, and can be purchased for less elsewhere.

Best place to purchase pens in the UK is at the London Pen Show. Spring or Autumn.

I have an old thread on this somewhere but I'm having trouble locating it.  It would be from 2020 if you wanted to search.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
