RED ? No way as far as I am concerned.

Red is my favorite color and I have purchased lots of red inks through time . Having said that I was often surprised by the color of the supposedly red inks when I received them. There is no way that these colors should be called red . As a red color afficionado I find this very regrettable.

All the best

Patrick

I concur. There are so many reds that lean too pink, or orange, brown, or burgundy.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 20 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, FWP Edwards Gardens

MontBlanc 310s F, mystery grey ink left in converter

Sheaffer Jr. Balance ebonized pearl F, Skrip Black

Pelikan M400 Blue striped OM, Troublemaker Abalone

Platinum PKB 2000, Platinum Cyclamen Pink

Awhile back i bought a "famous brand" red and it was the worst ink of over 200 bottles purchased.  Seemed 2/3 water.

I couldn't give it away.

Must be said that this brand has really stepped up its ink game over last 20 years due to competition.

@Patrick L -- I know how you feel.

Have you had a look at Diamine Classic Red?  It's what I would call RED.  It doesn't lean brown or pink or orange or violet.  I mean "fire engine" red -- "smack in the middle of the spectrum red", the color of my first car (a 1984 Dodge Omni and the color was called "Graphic Red") red.

Agree 100% - I have always said this was the best red out there. A real "true" red. When I first was looking, people would recommend Sheaffer Skrip Red. I found it way to pink when I tried a sample. I have about 5-6 ml left of my 80 ml bottle of Classic Red. And it is in my Ranga Monterey with the Architect Broad right now.

I'm curious, what brand was that? I think the worst red I tried was Monteverde red.

MB... the worst swill I ever came across, and its inks are now so amazing after others came to the marketplace.

Having piston pens, I tend to avoid red ...which are pen window staining like the plague.

And my first memories of red ink, never  left me a nitch for it.....Teachers used Red Ink!!!!

Purple I use once and rinse. Same with burgundy. Got to save my ink windows...........if one uses a CC pen go for it.

I do like Noodler's Apache Sunset...a red-orange.

MB Collodi, was much too red for me...don't remember what color it was supposed to be................looked up, supposedly a brown....no way in hell.

Maybe I can try needle filling a cartridge with it....but only because I like  shading brown inks....and maybe it's changed color in the bottle.

By now it should have a good price on the Bay.

My favorite red is Levenger Cardinal red.  But I still think Momiji is pink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Same here (and yes, red also has the negative association of primary and middle school for me ;) ). However, I also had a vintage Lamy 27 ink window stained by Montblanc Permanent Blue.

Permanent inks...I have perhaps two...a MB very dark grey...Meisterstuck 90 years, permanent grey, and a Pelikan urkunden-tinte...outside some IG inks.

I did most of my Grey inks a few months ago, and for the second time that MB permanent grey, disappointed.

Not that it's permanent but the old MB Oyster/now Cool Grey, if one wants shading is one to get...I even broke my vow to buy no ink costing more than €20 on that Cool Grey.

I'm sure someone here has  a cure for stained ink windows...I remember seeing it, but not into preventing check forgery inks, didn't pay attention.

I pretty much only use red ink for addressing holiday cards.  My go-to right now for that is Diamine Red Dragon.  I like the darker tone but to my eye it does skew slightly blue.  Since I don't use much I bought the horrible 30 ml Diamine bottle.

I find Momiji a rwally weird one. In some pens it's pink and in others it's a weird deep pink with a maroon edge. Sometimes it reminds me of turning acer leaves and then sometimes I just hate it,

Also Taccia Aka ("aka" means "red" in Japanese). Simple, clean, no shading, and certainly no shimmer or sparkly bits. Waterman Audacious Red is pretty good, but it shades some and the lighter parts lean a little pink in my eye.

(I don't have the Diamine ink so I can't really compare them)

Vintage Quink with Solvex does a pretty good job of destaining converters and ink windows.  It is still available with a little searching on the usual auction sites.

Noodler's Eel Rattler Red is also very good at removing stains.  Eel Blue works, too.

When all else fails you might try Oxychloride X but it can be difficult to get and requires extraordinary precautions when using.  See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mir2nf7ypUw
