Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Sheaffer Skrip Red

This is review #291 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Bright, bold red without any pink. In the slide I see lots of orange and yellow, but this ink is definitely red.  It dries a little faster than average during pauses.

Since I've heard it can stain, I put it in the Penmanship body.  Cleaning was quick and easy with plain water - no sign of staining.  I put the cartridge into another Prera because I like this red enough not to waste any (originally came from a Sheaffer cartridge).  It may stain the softer plastic of the cartridge - don't know yet. Will add that info when I clean the cartridge.

Zoomed in photo (Too orange on one monitor, too red on the other...)

Scan of Completed Review (Needs a little more orange, but very close.)

Absorbent Paper Close-up (top is puzzle paper like thick newsprint, bottom is old 20lb copy paper) (AP: What my eyes see is darker, flatter, and almost like dried blood; CP: Also not as dark or flat as how it looks in person.)

Line width (The "I" in "Ink:". Magnification is 100x. The grid is 100x100µm. The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each. The line width for this ink is roughly 274µm. With 291 inks measured, the average line width is 296µm.)

Excellent review @LizEF

I remember cleaning this ink was a nightmare in my experience. Probably I used a vintage pen and I regretted it :) glad your experience was different.

Love your sketch, poppy/rose. 😁. It's very soothing to the eye for such a bright red 😊

Looking forwrd to learnig more about the Duke of texture next week 😁

Me too! :D  (Sorry it was a bear for you, though.)

:) Thanks.  It's more of a copy and then doodle, though.  My original plan was to doodle in the petals, but the card was too small.  I should have done it on a 4"x6" card.  Oh well.  It's nice enough as-is...

Yeah, it's a really nice red.  I can only find it for sale in cartridge packs of multiple colors, though.  I'm guessing these are old stock.  It seems like Sheaffer aren't making inks at the moment... :(  I might actually buy a bottle of this red if they were.

For someone who's not a huge red ink lover, I sure have a lot of them: Corn Poppy, Monteverde Ruby and Valentine, Pelikan (yard sale bottle, free!), a few from InkVent, J Herbin, and Chesterfield, and this.

I don't recall having trouble cleaning it from pens, but then I tend to use cheapies like Preppies for red ink.

It's red.  Yup.  I appreciate the fast dry time.

A rusted city gone horribly wrong.  A crowd rushing to—-?

@LizEF, I love the story and the sketch as well as your reviews, so thanks for making Tuesdays colorful!  💝

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I thought Skrip Red had been replaced by Inferno Red.

Thanks for the review.  I suggest KWZ Thief's Red as an alternate.

Nice review, nice ink. It had always been a "bench-top red" (for me, too). Until I replaced it with Diamine's Poppy and/or Wild Strawberry.

I think it's quite sad that this ink isn't available - it has tons going for it!

Heaven knows!  Neither is available right now.  The only things I could find are blue, black, and blue-black plus packs of cartridges with 5 colors (one of which is red).  I'm guessing these are just existing stock that hasn't sold off yet...

Thanks, @lapis!  I agree.  Wild Strawberry is coming up soon.  I may have to get a sample of Diamine Poppy - in about 3 years.... :D

Best thing to do here -- for you or me or anybody-- would be to compare  the two critters. I myself find the two almost identical.........................

Well, it will have to wait until I get a sample of Poppy, but if I do, when I review it, it will get compared to all past reds...  (Part of me really wants to re-group my ink swatches by color, to speed up these comparisons, but there are some inks that fit in multiple color groupings...)

I have both the Diamine Corn Poppy and Skrip Red. I can look for writing samples and photograph them side by side, but I can’t do a direct comparison with fresh ink just yet- too many pens going and red lasts a long time as I don’t use it often. I’m currently cleaning my house as I have company coming to visit for the holiday, but when they go home I will update here.

Top 5 (in no particular order) of 30 currently inked pens:

Sheaffer 100 Satin Blue M, Pelikan Moonstone/holographic mica

Parker T1, Dominant Industry Dominant Blue

MontBlanc 1441 F, Monteverde Brown Sugar

Platinum PKB 2000, Platinum Cyclamen Pink

Waterman 52 EF, Herbin Bleu Pervenche

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

@LizEF Thanks as usual for the stellar review.  Too bad this ink isn't available, because it seems to be a nice color.

My go-to "red" red is Diamine Classic Red; and when I want a red that's a little more permanent it's Noodler's Park Red (but that leans a tiny bit pink).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Agreed.  Maybe there's still hope it will return...

Thank you for the excellent review and the further adventures of your stalwarts- it’s such a highlight to read every week, like the Sunday funnies.  The company is my best friend of 33 years and her family, who are taking a rare flight to come spend time in the PNW for her birthday. They aren’t staying with me, so it should be great. We’re meeting up for outdoor activities and food.

There is nothing to complain about the carnation (a beautiful drawing), neither about the microscopy image (WOW, liquid tree bark! :D), nor about the story part (it feels like being in the centre of the hurricane) - and for sure not about this red ink. 👍

Thank you, @LizEF, for bringing it all together! :)

I love neutral reds - maybe because they are sooo hard to get. The most neutral in my collection is Waterman Red, but now I set Scrip Red on the long wishlist ... oh, wait! 🤫😶 Unobtanium? (Other colours are available from European sellers, not the red one :( )

However, it is Wednesday morning and I had the pleasure to start may day with reading a new story part!

One life!

Yeah, bummer.  The only way I can find to get it is a rather expensive way to go:

I went looking for a bottle of this red, since I only have the later cartridges; I was lucky enough to snag full packages of Skrip (Slovenia) Red, Green, Blue, Blue-Black, and Brown last year on clearance. I ended up buying a 16 oz(!) bottle of the US made Permanent Red. I can compare that one with the others, and am happy to share- that’s so much ink, and I don’t grade papers!

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺
    • Mercian
Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
