I bought this super expensive 2024 planner from endless stationary with regalia paper because everyone said it is fp friendly and zero bleedthrough and feathering and that it has incredible sheen showing capabilities the one I bought has so much bleed through zero quality and virtually no sheen in the below photos I used pilot irushizuku Yama budo and kanwrote heritage ebonite feed with a medium nib please tell me what I did wrong that I didn’t get any sheen

i saw All the angles and there was no sheen

Please tell me what to do

Contact the store with these pictures, offer to send some paper samples back for analysis and demand a replacement or refund?

Yeah, I was disappointed with Regalia too.  I bought three Endless journals and tested with several of my pen/ink combinations.  The wetter nibs with Iroshizuku inks all bled through badly, as you show.  Disappointing as now I cannot use my favourite pens with them (Custom 743 FA/Take-sumi; Justus 95 M/Kon-peki; Custom Urushi MF/Syo-ro).  Regalia only seems to be happy with EF and F nibs that run on the dry side.

Cheers,

Effrafax.

Is it because we got a bad batch o because quality control is bad as many reviews on YouTube say that they are good or is it because they only make this kind of paper now

while I have no recent buys from them, their notebooks (Recorder and Observer) and also the noteblocks have been excellent, no complaints.

I'd say it's early yet, give them time to respond. They usually do.

Good to hear that... Let us know how that one works out, and maybe they will figure out what happened to the first one you got...

there are many issues with Regalia paper. over last 2 years i have been told many reasons, and as a fool i have always believed and got a new Regalia Recorder in the hope that those issues are fixed, but no. Now i have 3 new ones in my stock, and a 2023 planner that I couldn't use after April (my lazyness, not the paper). i don't hate them but they are my last resort, sometimes getting TR/Clairefontaine/etc where I live isn't easy or cost effective. (before Regalia, Recorders came with TR68 paper, and that's the best notebook i have used).

  • the paper takes in more ink, and so your line width is almost one size up, and F writes like an M, so you need to adjust
  • because of the above, some inks go through - Yama Budo is actually a very wet ink, but even some midly wet inks actually make the other side of the paper unusable, thus doubling the cost and irritation. Wet pen + fast dry inks work ok, but its a bit limiting. especially my BB and OBB had to go out for the month or two i take to finish. you should try with a dry ink.
  • skipping - while writing a line, you may notice that suddenly the pen doesn't write a letter or two. as you finish the page, on most pages you may notice this happening 2-3 times and a pattern emerges, sometimes of a fingerprint. initially i assumed it was sweat or oil from my hands that was causing it, i've since realised that this is how the paper comes from the shop. this to me was very irritating, and on some pages it was every 3rd /4th word which i couldn't write. i wrote back, was told that the batch was bad. I got a new in Dec 2024 after checking if it was the latest batch, the problem has reduced, but not significantly.
  • dry time/smudging - i saw this issue with pens inked for more than a month or more - with some inks, the ink didn't dry immediately, and took more than 10 minutes. i haven't seen this happen on other paper. moreover, even after drying out, the ink smudges, and the pages even stick together. this wasn't a common issue, but still very irksome when it happened because its hard to predict which ink will have this issue.
  • page thickness - not a huge issue - because of the way these books are bound, the binding-side curve on page is higher,  its just a bit of niggle if you are used to flat-open books. some nibs feel scratchy because the angle of the hand changes with the curve.

i prefer other papers like TR/Midori/Clairefontaine over Regalia for notebooks because i don't have to be careful about inks or nibs i use. having said that, Regalia isn't the worst paper, its usable as long as you can identify which of your inks are decent. Shading and sheening are definitely better than most , if you like that sort of stuff. it's readily available in India, and within price range it performs better and comes in a nice A5 black book. as always, just be mindful of the pen+ink+paper combination. (going back to filling the daily crossie with a sailor EF and the driest ink i have, Herbin vert empire, no bleeding).

I received my new notebook

Endless’s quality control is bull. It has the same exact problems as the previous book zero sheen feathering and bleed through with a m nib with Yama budo

I have tried 2 inks in this book (that’s all I have right now)

the pilot irushizuku Yama budo and toppers black:a deep black ink with bronze sheen

toppers black is the cheapest sheening ink 40₹ or half a dollar

i am finding toppers to have sheen on the regalia paper but showing some bleed through

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
