Mitsubishi Uni-Ball ONE P Gel Pen

Recommended Posts

This is a review of the Mitsubishi Pencil Uni-Ball ONE P 0.5mm Gel Pen in "Grape" (blue color), P/N UMNSP05.63. The pen was purchased from Amazon for $5.95 USD. I have seen this pen for sale on JetPens and Amazon. Here is the link from Amazon where I bought the pen:

This pen is (for me anyway) a little different in that it is short and thick. It clips securely to my breast pocket yet does not bottom-out, so no ink stains. The pen is still long and thick enough to write comfortably with.

On Amazon and JetPens the pen comes in seven colors: Grape (blue), Hakka (pastel green), banana (pastel yellow), coffee (pastel brown), orange (mandarin), pink, and soda (a light pastel blue). The orange (mandarin) color is my favorite, but at my purchase time on Amazon it was only available with a 0.38mm refill, which is a bit too fine and scratchy for my taste. JetPens has all the colors available with both 0.5mm and 0.38mm black refills, but as usual the JetPens price is higher than Amazon.

Dimensions: Length including knock (point retracted) 4.60 inches (116.84 mm), (point extended) 4.48 inches (113.79 mm). Barrel diameter 0.54 inches (13.82 mm).

The pen is mostly made of plastic and is quite light. Unlike shown below in the image scraped from Amazon, the knock remains depressed when the point is extended. My pen came with a uni-ball ONE UMR-05S black 0.5mm cartridge which is 4.38 inches (111.25 mm) long and 0.23 inches (5.84 mm) in diameter. A Pilot LG2RF-8F/BLS-G2-7 0.7mm refill will not fit in the pen, the point is too thick for the refill to be extended.

As is usually the case, generic gel pen refills from China fit perfectly in this Uni-Ball pen when you remove the small plastic tip protector from the Chinese refill and insert it into the back end of the refill. This is the 0.7mm blue refill from China I am using in this pen ($7.99 USD for qty-30 refills, $0.27 per refill):

I’ve been seeing these on Reddit. Today, well yesterday, I bought an old style Lamy Balloon rollerball pen in green.

Then I put the Mint and Coffee Uniball One P in a cart, added Zebra Sarasa Vintage refills because they will fit the Uniball. Also added some Traveler’s Notebook inserts at tokyopenshop.com, which is in Iowa. Later I got the transparent coconut and iced tea Uniball One P on AliExpress, overpaying for those. The light blue and light pink versions in “Jelly” are easier to find.

So I now have 4 Uniball One P pens ordered. I’m going to save the ones I ordered with refills for my birthday in September.

By the way, you can put either size refill (.38 or .5) in the pens. I watched the video on the tokyopenshop.com website about the Uniball One P. That’s where I learned about the Sarasa refill fitting, and the ability to use either pen tip size in any of the Uniball One P pens.
